Topic: Toshiba laptop gave tremendous noise. Solution found.

Hello all,

This post was originally much longer than what you see here.  I was able to find a solution to my problem.  But, I cannot delete the post.

In any case, perhaps it's better if I don't delete the post in case what I learned can help someone else.  Furthermore, we can learn things from replies to the post.

The original post was about using Pianoteq on my Toshiba laptop.  I had a tremendous amount of "processor noise" coming out of the audio output.  Every time, I typed something, every time I moved the mouse, or made an on-screen adjustment the noise got louder.  Even when I wasn't doing anything, there was a constant high pitch.  Actually several, different, harmonically unrelated high pitches.

I went into more specifics (my laptop model, processor, operating system, RAM, etc.).

Here's a solution that I found on another website:

When I disconnect the power adapter from the body of the laptop, all noise stopped, and I heard only the Pianoteq sounds, even at high volumes.  It sounds great.

This could be because my battery is a few years old (4 years old).  It could be because the power adapter is a few years old.  Or, it could simply be "the way it is" with Toshiba laptops.  All I know is that now I can use Pianoteq for a public performance, like a wedding or playing at a restaurant, which would have been impossible with all the noise I was getting earlier.

So, I guess I will use only the battery.

Thank you,

Joe

Hi,

I'm glad to hear that you found a temporary workaround... but truth be told, sound hardware in laptops is very often absolutely awful. There's no sugar-coating that fact. Macs are a bit better than PCs, or so I'm told, but I have had many, many examples of - sound in PC laptops over the years. My current 'main' device is a convertible Win8/i5 tablet that cost a small fortune, and still it doesn't manage audio SNRs of more then -50dB... its audio output quality is just barely sufficient to watch movies.

No amount of driver updates, service packs or operating system upgrades will fix noise problems: awful hardware stays awful hardware. Many of those devices are also not quite linear and distort the sound, make it sound tinny or muffled. To be fair, high quality sound is not that easy and requires a bit more engineering and electronics than the manufacturer of a Laptop is usually willing or able to invest.

The only 'real' fix I can suggest is investing about a hundred bucks and getting an external sound interface. There are very usable ones in that price range e.g. from Tascam, Steinberg and Focusrite. Compared to laptop sound even a cheap Behringer device (e.g., UM2) would probably be a vast improvement.

Edit: even switching to a desktop PC wouldn't help you too much. The main noise source is the power supply, and desktop PCs are not much better in coping with a noisy voltage than laptops. In other words, built-in sound (of PCs at least) is bad almost as a matter of principle.

Re: Toshiba laptop gave tremendous noise. Solution found.

Well, in fact, 99% of the time, the noise is coming from the "earth" connection. You should/could remove it from the plug, but, as they say, "at your own risk" of course. Now, it might be worth a try. It's a lot cheaper than buying a new laptop...
By the way, I just had to buy a new AC adaptor to replace a broken one for an Asus laptop and in fact... there was only a 2 sprong plug on the new one, no earth connection at all. Go figure.
This being said, a good audio interface is always a (very) good idea.

Thank you kalessin and Luc for replying to my post.  The sound is actually pretty good right now.  Instead of getting a new laptop, I'm just going to get a new laptop battery for now, and use it off the battery.  But, I'm happy with what I hear.

Thanks again for posting replies.
