Topic: Vintage Tines vs Lounge Lizard

Is it me or is the Pianoteq 5 Rhodes aka. Vintage Tines generally more aggresive than LL? I did a comparison of them side by side (LL 4 demo) because I am looking for a softer sound. No matter what I do, parameters or random button, Vintage Tines sounds quite hard. How do I tweak a softer attack in Pianoteq? Or is it just born that way?

Re: Vintage Tines vs Lounge Lizard

I'd say just the opposite - Pianoteq excels for mellower sounds, but struggles a bit if you want a really aggressive sound. LL can produce extremely aggressive forte sounds if you tweak the settings, without needing to add distortion.

Re: Vintage Tines vs Lounge Lizard

I have LL full version and I have tested PTQ EP too, but I must say neither of those two really have convinced me. I have Nord Stage 2 and Clavia's new sampled EPs are just amazing point of reference to me how EP should sound. If I first play my Nord and then those modeled EPs (LL/PTQ) those latter two sound very artificial and clinical. In general IMO EP is so much easier to sample well than Ac.pno. And when you sample a vintage EP there will probably be small imperfections in tone which make it more alive.

All this been said, new PTQ 5 is great for those ac.pnos! It has really improved in so many areas.

Re: Vintage Tines vs Lounge Lizard

if it's too clinical, destroy it ! That's just what the "condition" slider above the kb is meant for... try it, you'll be amazed what it can do ;-)

Re: Vintage Tines vs Lounge Lizard

What about if you take the 'R2 Soft' preset and reduce the hammer tine noise in the design panel? (requires standard version)

Re: Vintage Tines vs Lounge Lizard

Hello,
before Pianoteq 5 I prefered Lounge Lizard, the R2 seemed to me too artificial... but now I believe the R2 better than the 4.5 version and I think is also good than Lounge Lizard.
But all the presets use too the tine effect, if you reduce the value of tines the sound is really good and seem more like a Rhodes.

Re: Vintage Tines vs Lounge Lizard

Interesting - because EP models didn't have any changes since v4... they were not the focus of beta testing at all.

Hard work and guts!

Re: Vintage Tines vs Lounge Lizard

A friend think the same think, we are duped by our ears ?

Re: Vintage Tines vs Lounge Lizard

Yes, ears can play some very interesting games with our brain.

Hard work and guts!

You are right that there were no changes in the core EP models, but the few presets (those where the output menu displays "Room mic") involving microphones have a new sound because they benefit from the improved acoustic model for sound radiation. That was done with the purpose that the new mics can be used in the EPs (requires standard or pro version).

Re: Vintage Tines vs Lounge Lizard

Soundboard radiation and string, am I right?

So I presume the KIViR instruments, in V5, also have some benefits, despite of had no be reworked yet, as it's using V5 engine now.

No, the KIViR instruments don't use the latest engine updates, contrarily to the EPs. This is still on the todo list (and as I said somewhere, KIViR beta tests are starting very soon).

Re: Vintage Tines vs Lounge Lizard

Just curiosity...  How to beta test vintage instruments (average 150 to 200 years old) with people used to play in modern pianos?

There are chances for many mistakes, as many original characteristics could be perceived as defects.

I may have forgot that parameter, will definitely do that, thanks!

So my ears are always ok, I'm quiet now.
