Topic: CMIM-MIMC piano competition

There is a great international piano competition going on in Montreal right now. If you want to listen to some of the great upcoming young classical pianists, here is a link enabling you to listen to some really nice performances:

General link to the competition site: http://concoursmontreal.ca/permanent/en...didats.asp

My personal favorite at the moment is Alexander Ullmann (wonderful Stravinski) but you can make your own choice!

Caution: The performance output is kept very low, you may have to increase the volume more than usual...

Re: CMIM-MIMC piano competition

Listened thru the Tchaikovsky 1 (Ullman), but struck less by the fine 'solo' performance (and yes it is) than by the composer's *solid* wedding of orchestra's and instrument's parts -admirable. That's because yesterday I'd listened anew to Chopin 1 (composed 2?) for the marvel of keeping the solo and orchestra clear of each other it is. Admirable again, and much earlier. Was it the model? Seems possible, on account of the comparable excellence on this single head, clearly a primary aim, twice.

Have a listen to that head, twice -

Chopin Concerto 1

- and compare the thunderous muddle the Prokofiev 2 makes, in the competition.

ADDED : Seems first prize is Australian, though the recording of July 4 is 'a venir'. "I'll be back."

Re: CMIM-MIMC piano competition

The results of these competitions is always a bit of a surprise (except for Beatrice Rana 3 years ago that was clearly a very superior musician). I liked Ullman in the semi-finals but I didn't listen to the Tchaikovski concerto that I can't really stand...I favored Charles Richard-Hamelin's Rach 2...

First prize to Jayson Gillham is really surprising to me, although for the other two I agree...oh well, they're all great pianists anyway!

I think the semi-finals and finals soundcloud files will stay online for a while, feel free to go back and listen some more.

Hi Gilles - Thanks for the post about the concert competition.  The above video is quite interesting in that it is a great opportunity to compare notes to those of PTQ during the slower passages.

All of the contestants were great.
