Topic: Yamaha YDP 131 pedal controller conflict with keyboard

Hi everyone!

I just arrived on Pianoteq and in the MIDI world of keyboards with a previous long experience on acoustic pianos.
As I'm currently stuck with an old Yamaha YDP-131, I wanted to take the leap and to start tweaking around!!

My current configuration is :
-Yamaha YDP-131 digitial piano (with pedals),
-USB 2 Midi cable Logilink
-Windows 7 64b
-Creative Titanium XFi sound card as the end output device

The problem I have is the following:
whenever I use of one of the pedals, a key is stroke at the same time and the pedal remains frozen in the "1" state and would not release.

In summary, when I push consequently on sustain, then soft, then sostenuto pedal, the MIDI event list shows:
ch1 Note 064 On (E3) veloc: 127
ch1 Note 067 On (G3) veloc: 127
ch1 Note 066 On (F#3) veloc: 127

In the options/MIDI window, the settings are the following:
MIDI Mapping = Minimalistic
Controller 64 - All - Sustain Pedal
Controller 67 - All - Soft Pedal
Controller 66 - All - Sostenuto Pedal
[...]

Obviously, it's very annoying to play any piece and have 0 idea where this problem could come from!
Any help in that regards would be really, really appreciated!!

Thank you very much !

Arkho

Hey,

it seems, that you are getting Note On 64 instead of Control Change 64 Midi events.
A quick research in the internet showed, that several cheap MIDI to USB Cables hab Problems with some Keyboards.
The Amazon reviews for your Logilink cable (at least at the german amazon page) says, that there are some other people who have exactly the same problem as you.
Some other review says, that the user openend the electronics an it was not according to the MIDI specification. The opto-isolator and other parts are missing.
He than did the following changes:

resistor R11 -> 0 Ohm -> removed
resistor R3 -> 1 kOhm -> 680 Ohm
diode D1 -> BAS21 added
resistor R5 -> 220 Ohm -> added
opto-isolator U1 -> LTV817B -> added

After the changes everything worked fine.

If you are not into modding the USB cable by yourself, i would suggest, to test another cable.
I'm pretty sure everything will work ok with another MIDI to USB cable.

Hi Pascal,

Thanks for this great feedback!

I actually didn't see this type of advices among the Amazon comments I was looking at! As I do not have the components to proceed myself to the changes, I think I'll just ask for a refund as I ordered it very recently.

Then, as an alternative solution, do you (or anyone) know about a more reliable brand/type of MIDI/USB cable to replace the one I'll be returning?

Thank you again for the advice,
Cheers,
