Topic: Resonance in STAGE version

Hello,
any idea if it's possible to increase resonance of D4 piano in STAGE version ?
Maybe there is something in the Effects menu, which could help a little ? Grand piano I use at my piano school has more sympathetic resonance than D4 I use in PT, so I need to apply sustain pedal differently. I know the best would be to buy normal version of PT, but that will be my present for next Christmas.
Thanx a lot.

Re: Resonance in STAGE version

Hi jarosujo,

I've got the same problem. I noticed that my teacher's Bechstein has got a significant longer sustain than "my" D4 on Pianoteq. On Pianoteq I can afford lazy pedaling, but I always regret this afterwards when I'm sitting behind the Bechstein, all sounds mix horribly...

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the answers of the experts, but a quick fix is to use the D4 Jazz Recording BA, this piano has got a longer resonance, IMHO a more realistic compared to the grand of my teacher.

Hope this helps,

Jo

Yes, I recognize this. On PT you can get away with murder in your pedaling. You can tweak this away by modifying some parameters, but not really without side effects in the colour.

My suspicion is that this is because some people now grow up with digital rather then real pianos, and they expect a much short sustain.

Re: Resonance in STAGE version

Yes a real Grand always need to be tamed! A realy good grand is always easy to play "too much"! And the most digital pianos is much more easy to "control". But with the need to tame the grand comes also the possibility to use this "swelling effect" to build the soundpicture to something incredible intense and great (if you learn to use it the right way). This is why I always increase both impedance and string resonance, yes it change the sound a bit but I think this is so important for a really good piano experience (but I think I actually should raise them even more to get it really great...). But I'm using the pro version so, sorry that I don't answer your question...

Re: Resonance in STAGE version

Actually main reasons I bough PT is it's excellent long decay, resonances and play-ability. I believe decay and resonances is way much better than most (if not all) built-in DP sound engines. Even when I tried 5000€ Clavinova, decay length was very poor. Probably only Roland SN engine can achieve similar results.
Also every grand piano is different and I believe the room acoustics is quite important. I tried 3 grand pianos at my teacher's school, 2 of them in smaller rooms were very resonant compared to default PT setting. However, when I tried third and the best one in concert hall, it was much less resonant. Probably still more then default PT setting, but not much more and I could use similar pedaling technique.
Anyway, I will most likely buy NORMAL version of PT, so I will be able to adjust resonances according to current grand piano I will be using at the school.
