Topic: Headphones !

Well... after a lot of tries, I think I have discover where was my velocity probleme with pianoteq.

The answer is the headphones.
You might think they wasn't good enough ?
It is the contrary...  I used my headphones akg701 on my mox8 but...
without amplification.

When I change headphones (for an other not too bad : dt 250 beyerdynamic) I must change the volume (something like 8 less decibels)

What is you opinion ? Do you think I have found the solution ?
It sounds better and I can hear the difference between each equalizer setting.
(I could before but not as much)

My apologize for the strange velocity curves I had suggested.

...

Re: Headphones !

Not sure about velocity curves, but headphones make hudge difference in sound quality. I was not sure about buying PT until I got Sennheiser HD598. Since then I never used internal DP sound anymore.
Pianoteq + HD598 = big smile on my face :-)

Re: Headphones !

Speaking in terms of health...  Many people today get hearing problems due low quality or crap haeadphoes.  The poor quality leads people to increase volume too much trying to listening some sound details which are poorly reproduced.

The closed headphones help isolate enviroment sounds, sound polution, reducing the need of a high volume.

In other words... Stay away from low quality headphones.

Re: Headphones !

To me, Pianoteq always, always sounds much, much better through monitors than through headphones. The notes just need the space and air to evolve.

Re: Headphones !

Did you try good open headphones like Sennheiser HD 598 ? It sounds great, way much better than my previous semi-open AKG K99.

Re: Headphones !

I wonder about the quality of the best vintage headphones:

PunBB bbcode test

Ok, the best option is to take you laptop with pianoteq, or even a recording in mp3, and go to a store and test with diferente headphones.

If no headphone please you, don't buy.

Some headphones can sound almost good for overal music, like pop, but sounds terrible to piano solo.
A good recording of piano solo it's always the best way to judge headphones.

I must admit that, no, I haven't tried good open headphones.

Hi Jake . . I have a pair of Beyerdynamic 880 headphones from 1987 - I see them still for sale in the catalogues.  They are open on the side.  I like to listen to the piano with the external speakers on and from the headphones at the same time. .  a great pair of headphones.
