Topic: How to... WHAT????

There are many people on youtube that thinks they are teaching music, creating vídeos with the title of : How to Play "....XXXXX"

But they only post a MIDI file played by a midi device displaying the animation of sequential notes.

Other just post a slow speed performance, playing extremelly slow, of the music, with no comments.

What's the purpose of that ???

There is almost no really teaching at all on youtube.
Hugh Sung did a good vídeo once, with many comentaries along, including what fingers to use, very long sequence of vídeo, but it was a little bit like for people who nearly couldn't read music sheet.

Soon as I saw such a version (being a typical Glenn Gould stunt performance of a piece at stroll speed, reacting to the standard hafta-make-the-flight-to-Oslo offering heard everywhere), I saw it could encourage a certain timorous soul to see the piece coukl be tackled - realistically!!!!

That for sure was why the YouTuber had assembled it, and I might add Gould's performance was very valid for the piece. Served it well.

ADDED: But here it is, make up your own mind about Gould's intentions. There's no doubt he could catch any flight he wanted.

Re: How to... WHAT????

There may be timing or reading issues or doubts when reading a score that, when you dont have a teacher, may be solved even by those midi playing.

Jane videos for example are extremely useful for me not only because of that but also because the fingering, I love her videos and find them very useful, I usually first read the score, then go to the piano and start learning it and then I see her performance to check the small details.

Has worked for me.

Re: How to... WHAT????

I know a synchronized score to the music can help...

But it's not the same thing as teach how to play.
That's what I mean.
The titles gave certain banalization, like it was just watch a vieo.

Something more elaborated: This guy for example helps many people in some moments, but still would need more care about the hand technic, and not just show the fingers and say that it's fast.

Robert rocks, he is awesome, I love his videos as well. But I also find learning from the others, even midi.

I agree about Robert Estrin . . I have communicated directly with him on occasion and think he has a very unique and informative site about piano performance and technology.

He is the best  found on youtube.

Have such good will to help that make everything appears possible/easy.

He remambers a bit Mark Hamill. Left the force to play piano...
