Topic: Pianoteq Pro reviewed in Sound on Sound magazine

Just got my subscription copy of this month's Sound on Sound magazine,
and it has a pretty positive (although not uncritical) review of Pianoteq in it. Well done!

Should be online in a month's time for free on http://www.soundonsound.com

Ahhh, but SOS has been in love with samples for so long that they're probably married to them.

And the divorce will not go smoothly (when they and the others actually realize that the true love wasn't as true as they thought).

Oh, and the cost of the separation/divorce is going to be at the expense of their credibility.   Tragic.

Re: Pianoteq Pro reviewed in Sound on Sound magazine

If SOS Magazine reviews are anything to go by, there are no bad products out there or they just do not review bad products.

They pretty much all read the same: A number of pros with one or two cons thrown in to maintain an illusion of objectivity.

To be fair, I am a repeat subscriber myself and they often have some great articles. I have just learned to take the reviews with a pinch of salt.

Their one criticism about Pianoteq is summed up in a note about the subjective artificiality of the instrument.

As for the pros, any owner of Pianoteq has no need of this review, but it is sufficiently lengthy that it might create some awareness for the uninitiated.

Good points.

So...what did SOS say? It's tiring, standing in bookstores reading magazines.

That is why you subscribe so you can read an article whenever nature calls.

Subscribers can also read the article online here:
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/feb10/a...noteq3.htm

In a nutshell:
------
+ Outstanding playability
+ Excellent expandability (add-ons)
+ Unprecedented scope for sound design
+ Compact installation
+ Intuitive interface

- Occasional hint of artificiality with some acoustic pianos
------

Now expand that to 2,000+ words and add a few pictures.

Well Glo, if you've summarized the article accurately, then it's obviously a winner.

Oh, wait, I already knew that.

Yes -- yes, we did.  :^)

The US version of SOS for the month of January doesn't seem to have this review. Just a near-the-front, 1/4 page article\announcement noting that the new version has been released, and that the pro version allows the editing of most parameters note by note.

Re: Pianoteq Pro reviewed in Sound on Sound magazine

I agree that almost any review from SOS or this kind of magazine (Audio, car...) is similar. But I have learned (sometimes the hard way) that the one or two criticism should not be taken lightly. What such a magazine dares to criticize is mostly a true shortcoming that cannot be disputed easily by the vendor.

Now, it depends of the buyer to decide if THAT shortcoming is critical for him or not.

I read their article from SOS and it made me aware that I should really be comfortable with the sound of Pianoteq before committing my $$$. The jury is still out... :-)

Marc.

Guilty guilty guilty !!  ...of premeditated murder of samples in the first degree !  Sentenced to spend eternity in a small computing box cranking out highly tweakable expressive virtual renditions of popular acoustic keyboard and percussion instruments !  There is no chance for parole.  Go directly to the keyboard.  Do not pass go, do not collect $200.
