Topic: silent piano with pianoteq

Hi all,

I'm pondering the possibility of using pianoteq in combination with a Schimmel silent (midi) piano. That's an acoustic piano with a digital built in for silent practice.
The silent module is from 2001 and is a Yamaha system.
The setups I'm considering are either:

1. getting a midi to usb interface to connect directly with my laptop, and then a sound cable from the laptop's headphone jack to the silent module's aux-in jack

or

2. getting an emu 0404 external sound card which connects to the laptop via usb, and to the silent module by midi.

I hate to be such an innocent on a forum that seems so advanced, but could anybody point out any mistakes I would be making here?

I'm mostly concerned that the silent module's sounds would continue to sound even though I would obviously want those from pianoteq to be heard.

Thanks for your consideration,
Andrew

I don't know any of these specific products, but at first glance, your second option seems wisest for listening with headphones, with the headphones attached to your external soundcard. That way you wouldn't have to worry about the piano's digital sound still being heard.

On the other hand, if the piano has its own speakers, and if you want to be able to also play PianoTeq through them, you could run the output from the soundcard to the piano's aux in. Usually, plugging something into the aux in will automatically cut the internal sounds. If not, there's probably a Local-off command to shut off the internal sounds.

In either case, I would go with an external sound card. The soundcards built into laptops just don't have the needed freq response, and they put out sound at a much lower volume.

Andrew:

I have (the now discontinued) EMU 1820M system, but as far as I know, the 0404 has the same onscreen mixer that enables one to select various outputs.  I have the option of selecting any or all of; headphones, powered monitor speakers attached to the computer, piano speakers.

The 0404 will certainly work for you - there are several Pianoteq users that use this card.

After the space age, and with powerful computer, sensors, carbon fiber revolution, they still use wood and felts even for a midi piano.

In comparison it's almost like Indy 500 was in the sort of style below:
