Topic: Nice Steel Pans!

As one of the people that requested steel drums, I want to say thanks for executing them so well!  I thought the jump from Pianoteq 3 to 4 sounded a little weird at first but after the last update, I'm really enjoying Pianoteq 4.  The steel pans really do have an organic feel to them, especially the hand versions. Thanks again for a beautiful instrument!   -Perry-

Re: Nice Steel Pans!

Agree 100%

But there are some improvements i would like to see.

About the handdrums it would be nice to have a section on the keyboard for "other noises"
I wish that Moddart allso had done a modeling of the bell like sound you get from the top of the hand-drum which is allways the low note/pitch.
It sounds different from the other tones on the drum whithout so much of the hand tapping sound and is sometimes done with the knuckle.
And i would allso like to have some keys where i only have sound from the hands tapping the metal like when the drum is damped, which is important when doing rythmic drumming.

I maybe should have started a new thread about this but i hope moddart read and listen to this anyway

Olepro,

the top note you mention is available in the "Hand Pan" instrument where actually all the lowest notes do reproduce the "ding" (G2 and below). This is why the lowest notes sound different than those above middle C.

Regarding sound from the hands tapping the metal, this is something you can maybe approach by:
- increasing the hammer noise
- push the "last damper" slider completely to the right (so that all notes have a "damper")
- push the mute slider to the right
- eventually increase the sympathetic resonance.

Re: Nice Steel Pans!

For the Steel Pans, I would like to see the notes doubled & split across the keyboard, so it would be easier to play tremolo rolls. Some Timpani libraries are set up that way and it works great.   -Perry-

Re: Nice Steel Pans!

That's why you have the new Mallet Bounce feature.

Hard work and guts!

Hi Phillipe

You are right, it does indeed produce the "ding" at the low notes. It's maybe because the attack (hand sound) sounds equal to the high notes i did not notice.
I would love to hav a slider/switch on the interface where we can choose between knuckle or hand attack.
About the hand sound tapping the metal. I cannot remove the fundamental sound of the note no matter what i do in the settings so it would be fantastic with a slider to mix between attack and fundamental here allso if it's possible.

This is suggestions and whishes for an allready fantastic instrument.
I actually bought a KORG padkontrol only for playing these instruments because it feels more real to tap the notes on the pads and because you can program the padkontrol to play the existing handpand tunings, which is really great

Hi Olepro,

What about loading one preset with hands on A, another one with mallets on B (among the Hand Pan or Spacedrum instruments), and assigning a MIDI controller to the A/B switch?

Regarding the fundamental, I'm not sure to understand, can't you reduce the fundamental by lowering the first slider in the spectrum profile? You can also eventually augment the other ones to increase the difference.

Re: Nice Steel Pans!

Hi Phillipe

Good idea abolut the two presets, i will try that
About the fundamental i mean all but the attack/hands Sound, but i will try to some more tweaking
Tanks for the help

Thanks for reminding me of the Bounce feature.  It would be spectacular in combination with the dual split keyboard setup I mentioned earlier!  I created a preset in BFD B.O.M.B. where I assigned the short buzz roll samples to two adjoining keys and the controlled, dynamic rolls I can get from that are great in my orchestral work.  I have Pianoteq Standard...do you know if it's possible to create the kind of custom splits I'm talking about in Pianoteq Pro?
