Topic: How to have simultaneous sound from pianoteq and other apps?

I run pianoteq on a Vista desktop with maudio fast track pro.

I must close all browser windows where e.g. youtube was playing and all music applicatipons such as media monkey in order for pianoteq to produce sounds. While pianoteq is running it is also impossible to have sound from any other application, e.g. from a playalong track.

Who can help me to configure my use of pianoteq that two or more sound sources from the PC can be active?

thanks in adance!

Re: How to have simultaneous sound from pianoteq and other apps?

Sorry, I'm a Mac/Linux guy. I did briefly run a Win7 dedicated Pianoteq machine, and it all worked fine, but I quickly replaced it with a smaller Mac mini. I haven't used Windows extensively since WinXP, but I'm pretty sure that Windows is supposed to mix sound as smoothly as Macs do. Are you using the asio4all driver to interface with Pianoteq? Could that be trying to get exclusive access to the sound device?

If you aren't running asio4all, you probably should because it drastically improves performance (ie latency), and if you are using it, maybe their documentation has more information on this type of problem.

Not sure if this will help, but:

In Vista, there is are two options that affect how an attached audio device interacts with other devices. You may have these options selected by default or by accident. To see if the options are selected:

1. In the Vista Control Panel, double-click on the Sound icon.
2. The Sound dialog box opens, listing the sound devices on your system. Right click on the device that you are using and click on Properties.
3. Click on the Advanced tab.
4. You will see two option boxes. Try experimenting with turning each or both of these off to see if they resolve your problem.

BUT: See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library...s.85).aspx , which explains why some programs run in "exclusive mode." There is a possibility, according to this document, that some slight latency could be increased if an app is not allowed to take exclusive control--several apps battling for the same output naturally crowd the data stream.

Re: How to have simultaneous sound from pianoteq and other apps?

Are you using the standard ASIO driver for the Fast Track Pro, or are you using another ASIO driver such as ASIO4ALL? If you are not using the standard driver, please try that.

I have the Fast Track Ultra, and it works fine -  I can play music in the background while I use Pianoteq. It doesn't make any difference whether I have "allow applications to take exclusive control" or not, in the Advanced properties.

When I use the onboard sound (for which I must use ASIO4ALL), I can NOT do anything else in the background.

I'm using Windows 7 - never tried Vista.

I'm not sure whether the Fast Track Pro is supposed to allow simultaneous ASIO & non-ASIO apps to work or not.   If you don't get a resolution here, you could try the M-Audio forums.

Greg.

Re: How to have simultaneous sound from pianoteq and other apps?

do you use the stand alone version of Pianoteq? Maybe you should use the VST version in any DAW app like the Pro Tools SE you should have included with your soundcard (correct me if I'm wrong). You would then be allowed to read wave files while playing Pianoteq (and/or other VST instruments BTW). If you don't have Pro Tools SE, you could try "Reaper" from Cockos for example.
