Topic: Clicky keys on Studiologic 990 Pro

I have been extremely happy with my keyboard for  a very long time but now some keys are sounding clicky (imagine a sound like creaking wood but metallic in nature) and this is slowly going to start driving me mad. Has anyone else come across this problem and have they managed to solve it (of course without buying a new controller!!) I have tried to find a repairer around where I live (Wirral) but no joy and matters are complicated by the fact I am disabled, so lifting said keyboard is a no no and I cannot afford to buy again unless I sell the children..........

Would appreciate any advice

Sometimes this is like finding a noise beneath your automobile .

I remember having squeaking notes a few times on one of my Fatar keyboards. A squeaking or creaking noise I'd consider different from keys clicking. If you listen closely while you push down the troublesome key very slowly do you hear the sound? If so, it's probably some kind of friction noise, and that's similar to what I had.

There are a number of screws beneath the keyboard, and I believe there are 4-5 on the back. Once these are removed (on all the Fatars I've owned) you can lift the top back, it's on a long hinge. I was able to get rid of the noise on my keyboard by applying lithium grease to friction points beneath the key. Different models have different methods of loosening and removing individual keys. Perhaps there's a guide for this on the internet, or Youtube, but regardless, it's not rocket science, and it can be done with a bit of effort.

Now a clicking sound when the key bottoms out may be something different, perhaps cushioning that has been compressed over time.

There are some folks on the forum who have more experience with the innards of these keyboards than I do, so perhaps some of them will chime in. Good luck!

Thanks Michael. Yes the noise is there as I press the key slowly. You know those blue strips of metal you find in mechanical toys and the click click noise they make when you flex them. Thats the sound I hear 4 or 5 little clicks..I'll have a go after Christmas when I'm feeling less stressed. Thanks once again and have a good Christmas.

KindredSpirit,

The sound you mentioned MAY be just the spring inside a key having gotten slightly misaligned. If so, it would simply be a matter or realigning it, which is a pretty simple fix.

I hope you have a great holiday yourself!

Hello KindredSpirit,

Some of the F.A.T.A.R. key/actions have a clever little cone shaped spring at the very rear.  Mr. Lino Ragni (deceased) came up with that little spring so as to streamline the automated assembly process in production.  They normally do not make noise but just a little bit of sewing machine lube or something more viscous such as fishing/spinning/casting reel lube on that spring and the little attachment hook at the bottom of the spring might just do the trick.
