Topic: Different instruments and custom modelling

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum so I would like to introduce myself. I'm a hobbyist and, after extensive research and trials, I seriously consider buying Pianoteq.

That said, I have a couple of questions.

First, as I understand, each instrument in Pianoteq (K1, C2, C3, etc.) embodies an intrisic physical instrument, and they're all different from one another. Can anyone confirm this ? Or is it possible indeed to arrive at any instrument (e.g. C3) from any other one by tweaking and adjusting the various parameters ?

In the latter case - each instrument is really a different instrument - is it possible for a Pianoteq user to create one's own modelling ? What would be the tools for this ? I understand that this has been done by the KVR project. Is there some kind of "SDK" ?

I'm asking this because, (heaven forbid!) I love the V-Piano's All Silver Strings instrument and would like to know if that is something possible in Pianoteq !

That is correct.

Nope.

This is not really possible, but Pianoteq Pro gives you control of over 20 physical parameters for each INDIVIDUALLY. Meaning you can tweak each key to your own taste. But modeling from scratch, nope. That's actually what Philippe & Co. do in-house.

Hard work and guts!

Re: Different instruments and custom modelling

Thanks for the confirmation.

Definitely looking forward to an "instrument editor" software from Modartt in the future !

Cheers.

Since we'll never have access to the actual full physical model of each instrument to simulate (a huge finite element model, I believe), we won't be able to derive the simplified model that only can run in real time on our miserable personal computers ;-)

Am I wrong Modartt?

Iaoranaemaeva, you are right: having access to the full model would just be horribly complicate, that is why we wanted to reduce the complexity to a reasonable number of parameters, that can be adjusted globally in the standard version or note per note in the pro version.

In the standard version, counting the 8 overtones parameters in the voicing section, you have 25 adjustable parameters in the 3 upper panels. That allows already a nice soundscape for a first and easy exploration.

The pro version offers a larger soundscape: with the Note Edit, there are actually more than 10.000 values that can be adjusted separately, as you can in particular adjust each overtone for each note. So, although not providing the whole universe, it already allows to design quite a lot of instrument variants, that sometimes sound nothing like the instrument that was used for starting point. This can be tested for example by simply using the random button.

Re: Different instruments and custom modelling

I would like to see the Pro version expose more parameters in a future version.  I think per-key editing has limited usefulness, even to someone like me who likes to program their electronic sounds.  I would be far more tempted to upgrade to Pro if it also offered more (useful) global settings that aren't available in the Standard version.
