Topic: Speakers\sound card in the Apple iPhone? (Piano notes sound good.)

Anyone know anything about the sound card\speaker system in the iPhone? My son was playing a game of sorts in which the user touches little bubbles that play a melody using piano samples, and the samples sounded very good. Hard to believe on such a small system, but something about the sound is very appealing to me for piano.

I'm wondering if certain freqs are emphasized that by accident make piano samples sound good.

I suspect it's simply the lack of bass and lower midrange, which causes the higher mids and highs to be greatly emphasised.  Yes, I often like the piano sounds from small radios too.  There's a good YouTube clip which compares three different Casio DPs, side by side, each having different sized speakers. The presenter says that some people prefer the sound of the cheapest model, which has the smallest (tinniest sounding) speakers.

That may be all it is. The apple site says the frequency response is the usual 20Hz to 20,000Hz, but the small cones may be doing what you say. I don't hear it as tinny or thin, though. Has some body.

So...I guess I want to find out the usual decibel drop-off for small cones like these. To create a custom "piano through small speakers" fxp. Or plug my sound card into a radio with audio in's. Which I don't think many radio's have...

Jake,
You could try connecting good headphones to the iPhone, to see whether you prefer the sound from them, or whether you still prefer the bass-suppressed sound of the speaker.  Mind you, they may also have used nice samples......
