Topic: Pianoteq Linux on PS3?

Hi there, I was wondering if anyone here has tried to run pianoteq on a PS3 or if there are plans to release an .elf for PowerPC / Cell processors that would run natively.

I just read we owners of Ps3 Slims might soon be able to run linux on our machines, so I was hoping to put my Ps3 that's collecting dust to good use by having a semi-permanent setup using HDMI audio on pianoteq.

Any info about what distros were used, links, etc would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I guess it should be doable... if PT was open source it probably already would have happened

Re: Pianoteq Linux on PS3?

Could get some awesome performance if it was fully optimized for PS3 - running on all 6 available secondary processors. Not sure if that's possible under the linux environment. I've often thought that the PS3 is an ideal bit of hardware for something like Pianoteq. It's cheap, has lots of processing power, USB interfaces, and digital audio surround output. And Rock Band 3 comes with a midi adaptor.

I work in the games industry, so I'm used to programming PS3.

Re: Pianoteq Linux on PS3?

So am I. I worked for a large company until recently on music games.

Since Ps3 used to have official Linux built-in, can one assume that it is in fact legal for Modartt to release binaries for Linux/Cell for the product we purchased? I don't see why not.

I'd like to hear a response to this query from an employee. I'm sure it's just a few compilation flags, resolve some library dependencies, and bam-voila. I have a new use for a super expensive black box I bought and almost never use. This could be a real selling point for Pianoteq. The processing capabilities and audio quality on Ps3 are very good for Pianoteq.

Re: Pianoteq Linux on PS3?

The thing is Linux is no more supported by Sony, and they now have entered the "sue everyone" mode regarding ps3 hacking. See what is happening to this guy: http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2011/0...unmasking/

I'm sure that Sony will see substantial financial gains from their lawsuit.

Re: Pianoteq Linux on PS3?

Linux isn't supported on Ps3 Slims, but it still works on the original ps3, doesn't it? This has nothing to do with hacking whatsoever. It's a perfectly legal use of the platform.

Getting Linux onto a Ps3 slim is our problem, the two issues have nothing in common. On what basis would Sony be able to sue for releasing .Elf binaries for the Ps3 1.0 60gb version on Linux? I haven't read the Eulas on the original PS3, because I don't own one but I'm sure that information is out there:

Apparently as long as you have an earlier firmware you can still run Linux. Whether it's supported officially on later firmwares is irrelevent, I don't see how Sony can legally force you to have an internet connection and have the latest firmware on your console.
