Topic: A Microsoft Kinect being used to play a virtual keyboard & FL Studio

Using the open source OpenKinect code stuff, apparently:

I don't know if the XBox can generate the piano sound or if it has to be driven by a sampler or other source. Can we think of a virtual piano that might be hooked up to this?

Not as far-fetched as I once thought, it seems. I've seen videos of people using the Kinect to do all kinds of things. Here's another video of someone playing a very few notes using his hands in the air to hit virtual drum pads in FL Studio:

Hard not to wonder where all of this will go in another year or two. But can it detect velocity? It has to be able to judge speed, since it can replicate people dancing and hitting a ball.

Not to dwell on what may seem like a toy, but PrimeSense, the company that developed the motion-following device in the Kinect, has gotten together with ASUS to develop a similar box for the PC and plans to offer a software development program for it.  Announced release date is 2nd quarter of 2011:

Probably not useful for a piano, except for controlling parameters without a mouse?
