Topic: Sustain Pedal

Hi there,

I'm pretty new to Pianoteq so please excuse me if this is a basic question. I searched the forum for an answer prior to posting.

At the moment, I use Pianoteq as a plugin on Ableton Live. I record using a small MIDI controller keyboard and then manually adjust note placement and velocity afterwards.

After recording, I press the sustain pedal button on Pianoteq to hold the sustain down on that instrument. However, if I exit and re-open Live (and open the saved composition), I have to go through each Pianoteq instrument and put the sustain pedal back down again.

Is there some way to control this and not have to do it every time?

Re: Sustain Pedal

Hi ollyf,
I was wondering the same thing but for a different pedal - the soft pedal, or una corda pedal.  I sometimes like to try the pianos with the soft pedal pushed down a little as it takes out some of the hi-pitched synthetic quality of the pianos.  Since I don't have a hardware soft pedal, I manually move it down with my mouse-drag operation and leave it there for the duration of my session.  However, as soon as I close and re-open Pianoteq, it has forgotten where I left the position of the pedals (their positions have been zeroed out).
So I guess we should both ask, is there a possible update to a future version where the Pianoteq program remembers pedal positions for each fxp, or, if that might lead to confusion with downloaded fxp's, then at least pedal data from your last session?

Re: Sustain Pedal

Unfortunately this is not possible, fxp files cannot store any MIDI information such as pedal position, they can only store parameters associated to an instrument. These are actually two very distinct types of data:
- musical data stored in MIDI files with extension .mid,
- instrument information stored in fxp files.

Re: Sustain Pedal

That makes sense Philippe. Thank you.

However, if the pedal is linked to MIDI information, how/where do I find record midi data which corresponding to the pedal position?

The sustain pedal is Continuous Controller #64 (CC#64), and ranges in value from 0 (completely off) up to and including 127 (fully depressed).

The una corda / soft pedal is CC#67 and functions exactly as above.

Cheers,

Joe

Re: Sustain Pedal

For example, if you use the standalone version, click on the Pianoteq midi player record button, press the sustain pedal down, and finally save the midi file (File menu->"Save MIDI file"), this midi file will contain the information that you have pressed the sustain pedal, as mentionned by Joe. Same if you play notes, or press other pedals.

Re: Sustain Pedal

Thanks Philippe and JCFelice. I'll try this out immediately.
