Topic: short piece uploaded

I just uploaded a short piano piece that I played...
I used the K1 with limiter and reverb switched off and used Logic's Space Designer as reverb...
for the rest I randomized a lot of parameters in Pro to make it sound just a bit more 'alive'...
comments or suggestions?

Re: short piece uploaded

Really nice sense of the room. The piano seems to sit in a very specific place without there being any artificial "reverb" sound.

Makes me wish I had Logic...

Is there a vst that can give similar results, or a room designer native to other platforms?

Re: short piece uploaded

I like the sounds of Space Designer a lot - it's a convolution reverb...
only problem is that I always have to startup Logic to get that - I play Pianoteq as standalone program quite a lot because I just want to play piano and nothing more - who knows maybe at some point Pianoteq will have a reverb like this as well (if only my macBookPro will be up for the job then )

I think Mario mentioned some room designer software for Windows at some point - cant' remember the name anymore though...

I play Pianoteq inside of Mainstage (a part of Logic Studio) a lot, even when I only play piano. In that way I can use Space Designer....

Re: short piece uploaded

that is true.. must confess that I don't use Mainstage all that often so I tend to forget it...

Re: short piece uploaded

Hello Creart,

I especially enjoy how "live" your piano sounds with Space Designer.  In the past, I have been guilty of adding so much reverb that the listener is almost painfully aware that reverb has been added.  Not so with your recording!  Congratulations.

Cheers,

Joe

Yes I agree (unfortunately even with the stuff of using to much....) so, what Space Designer reverb do you use here?

Re: short piece uploaded

Thank you guys!
@berghs.kedjan - I actually used a medium outdoor space called 1.9s Venue Sizzling....
wanted to try something different this time to keep its sound more 'open' and thought that an outdoor space might help in that case
and it seems it's not all too bad

cheers
Hans

Re: short piece uploaded

I agree with the natural sounding reverb in this fine little piece (reminds a bit of Poulenc). The piano sounds very natural too. Maybe you could upload the fxp that you used...

Re: short piece uploaded

I wonder if choosing an outdoors preset means that essentially you are eliminating most of the reverb entirely--as though the piano sits in an anechoic chamber.

Re: short piece uploaded

Gilles, thanx.. must confess that I know the name Poulenc but don't know any work of his'.... which obviously says more about me than him
will google a bit on him - thanx...

Jake, I think they took the reverb from some outdoor concert space...
It still has a 1.9seconds reverb tail in the IR, so by no means anechoic...
and there is an absolute difference in sound when just switching PT's reverb off and play or switch SoundDesigner on over PT when PT's reverb is off...

Btw - have you ever been outdoor somewhere yourself and thought it sounded anechoic??? There is always reflectance from somewhere...

cheers
Hans

Poulenc has a lot of more virtuosic piano pieces but listen to this one and see if you hear resemblances. Same light and cheerful sound. That's a compliment, by the way

First time I hear it myself! It almost sounds like a development part for your piece when played in succession...

Yes that sounds nice!! Thank You!

Re: short piece uploaded

Nice listening, thank you.

I've found interesting to use the impulses from this page as a first step to give resonance to the anechoic sound of PT when you bypass the reverb and you need a very close sound. I like the damp version the most (the shorter one) but it's simple to shorten the tail in space designer if you prefer the no damper version. I know, it comes from an upright soundboard but it works
Then I apply the ambience I like/need using a second space designer.

thanx, you're quite welcome

hmmmm - sounds interesting - will give it a try - thanx for the link!

Re: short piece uploaded

Are there PC reverb\space design programs that can create a sound similar to what creart first posted?

I've searched before, and there seem to be an overwhelming number, along with many convolution samples. Seems as though it could take weeks to just download the programs and experiment. (And although I like many things about macs, I don't want to buy an entirely new system just for a reverb program, if possible.)

Re: short piece uploaded

I just uploaded a bluesimpro to youtube where I used both Space Designer mentioned in these thread and a third one... I also shortened soundspeed and lengthened the strings...

Re: short piece uploaded

Possibly OT (since this has nothing to do with the use of an additional space designer):

Your recording here, using the K1 piano, also brings out the sound of the instrument very well:

But without the extra room designer?

Did you play this directly into your sound card while using headphones? Were you using a default setting or did you make edits?

In this video I used the K1 solo rec with a changed velocitycurve and reverb and limiter off (When I did this I used the play version).

I had the same space designer reverbs on both videos but I see that I send more to the reverb buses in the bluesimpro... (maybe it was to much....).

I recorded the midi in logic pro 8 and the video in iMovie at the same time on the same computer (iMac 27") and then synced the sound and video in logic...

Re: short piece uploaded

Thanks for the details. Looking forward to more recordings.
