Topic: Pianoteq vs Ivory II

Hi all,
Before I start this thread I just want to say that I am a happy Pianoteq user and this question is purely out of curiousity.
I was looking at some demos of thenew sampled library update from Synthogy (Ivory II) and they claim to have built in a sympathetic resonance feature over a sample set of over 16 velocity layers. I have never played a sample library but I hear this is like playing the real thing (If I am to believe the hype). Do you think sampled libraries coupled with some technology to produce sympathetic resonance, pedal noise etc is really obsolete or do you think modelling is the way forward. I like pianoteq alot but as an instrument in its own right. I don't think pianoteq can make the cut as a piano at this stage.
Thanks in advance.....

Re: Pianoteq vs Ivory II

Modeling is the way forward, Pianoteq constantly raises the bar, and yeah, it can cut it as a piano pretty well now. And much better in days, months and years to come.

Check out this link to the 1st  of 3 videos on this very subject.  The only catch is, it's in Japanese! :-)

You can hear both Pianoteq and Ivory II back to back through the same sound production software (I think it's Logic on a Macbook Pro).
In terms of soundboard resonance and evenness across the keyboard (from key to key, and between velocity layers on the same key),  I think Pianoteq has got Ivory beat.  Unfortunately, if it's a Steinway sound your after, or even fooling the listener into thinking that you're sitting at an acoustic piano, well that's a work in progress for Pianoteq.

It's weird though; even after the demonstrator cranks up the resonance all the way on Ivory II, I would have expected more ringing, like you get in Pianoteq.  Maybe I can't judge it from a YouTube video, but if Synthogy has been advertising "sympathetic resonance" for so long now, I just can't hear it that well when a normal piano piece is being played.

If there are any Ivory II owners out there, please let us know how their resonance model/algorithm stacks up against Pianoteq's.

Re: Pianoteq vs Ivory II

Hi,
Thanks a million for posting the video its certainly very interesting. There is definitely a broad difference in sound between the 2 instruments. To my ears the difference becomes more apparent in the bass register. Both sound great although in terms of realism Ivory definitely takes first place hands down.  I am assuming that Ivory would not respond anywhere as well as pianoteq to being played but I have never played it. Again, I love pianoteq (Proud owner) but have Synthogy closed the gap in playability with this new update. I remember threads here where it was highlighted how sampled libraries sound dead and are worlds apart from pianoteq in terms of response etc. Have Synthogy closed the gap here do you think?

Re: Pianoteq vs Ivory II

Difficult to keep patience on this video.  Much, way muchhhhhhh talk and too few playing...

The hoster just makes somes chords here and there, and some very short playing moments.

I was almost hanging myself on the 3 part of the video...

Re: Pianoteq vs Ivory II

Is the 16 layers velocity of Ivory detectable, or it also have a algorythm to create transition variances between the 16 layers ???

After Drake, of Pro Mega II, and Akoustic, who also had a algorithm to create intermediary velocities, looks like the there is no more software clamming to use such algorithms to extend velocity layers

LOL. How arrogant. If EvilDragon posts the first response to a thread, look no further!

Re: Pianoteq vs Ivory II

I just assumed he had accidentally hit the paste button and pasted in some garbage. ;^)

That's Internet speak for ya. It isn't supposed to come off as arrogant sounding, sorry if you figured it that way
