Topic: Intermitent Speaker Noise

I don't know whether it's a mains spike thing or what, but every once in a while, I get a crackle from my speakers. This happens only through the speakers and not through my headphones so it is definately NOT a buffer thing!

Has anyone else had this problem?

Chris

Re: Intermitent Speaker Noise

Chris, the wiring in our house is pretty old, and even though I have several "shielding" power strips/supplies in place, I still get crackles over my various speakers (they all seem to be affected!) when someone flicks this or that light-switch in the house.  I've learned to live with the annoyance.  (And the headphones are unaffected here, too -- just speakers!!!)

Thank you dhalfen, at least it's not just me!!!

Re: Intermitent Speaker Noise

Hello Chris,

Here is another thought about crackling sounds in your system:

Does the crackling sound appear randomly while you play Pianoteq, or does it seem to occur at the same point in a given piece of music?

The reason for asking this is ... a non-random crackling noise might point to the Pianoteq software running into an overloaded output.  Does the red light come on in Pianoteq's display of volume?  If it does, then your crackles might be solved by adjusting the limiter to prevent the audio going into overload.

Otherwise, if the sound from your speakers happens to crackle randomly, then it might be related to an electrical hardware cause as described in earlier replies to this thread.

One last question for you:  Does your system crackle intermittently when various other audio inputs are engaged?  The answer to this question may point you towards Pianoteq or electronic hardware as a possible cause.

Food for thought.

Cheers,

Joe

I have a keyboard amp, i.e. an amp and speaker combined, it is plugged in and switched on at all times.
Every once in a while it crackles and I ignore it, if/when it gets persistent I unplug the sound cables to it and re-insert them.
These are "instrument" cables, aka "phone plugs".
I know it is a dirty connection and it might be worth pulling apart and cleaning up, but I'm too lazy to do that and the cleaning action of un-plugging/re-plugging is effective enough for the minimal labor (-:

Your case might be similar, i.e. a poor connection somewhere in the signal path TO the amp.

Re: Intermitent Speaker Noise

Hi Chris,

I've got a similar problem, which is bugging me. Process of elimination stuff.

Are you using the headphone output for your speakers also? If so, and everything's working fine with phones, then it's unlikely (but not impossible) that it's coming from your computer. That's assuming everything else is set the same. (If you're turning down the volume in Pianoteq when you use headphones, then Joe's thought about spiking Pteq might be the answer). If it's not inside your computer, then wiring, faulty grounds, etc as has been said.

Another thought is that, if the noise is VERY intermittent, by chance or Murphy's Law it just may not have happened with headphones, but it's still there. LIke when you bring your car in to a mechanic and you can't demonstrate the problem

Re: Intermitent Speaker Noise

I once got voices, not from any file, on my digital piano speakers, and when turned down it simple stopped. I ask to a person about, and he say that was impossible to get voices from some radio in a piano speaker, cause it had no circuits to process radio signal.

But I asked other person and he said it's not weird and he got amateur radio signal in his simple speakers many times.

Maybe it can get noises, if can get amateur radio to point we listen voices.

It makes me remamnber the fools who believe in "alien transmissions" or transmissions from "the world of dead", get by simple speakers and ordinary radio devices.
