Topic: Native Instruments release Clavinet/Pianet ....

Native Instruments have just released a 'vintage keys' sample-based VSTi instrument featuring a Hohner Clavinet and Hohner Pianet N.

I wonder what they sound like compared to Modartt's new clavinet?
(I'm guessing "crap" lol , at 50 times the file size - but would be interested to hear....)

Can't wait for a Pianet N in Pianoteq

Re: Native Instruments release Clavinet/Pianet ....

This would be Scarbee's work, so there's simply no way in the world it will sound "crap" IMHO.   Listening to the demo's, I think the the Pianet N sounds very good.  I read the details of the Pianet N when it was on Scarbee's site - 4 velocity layers. That's more than most would bother with for an instrument with such little dynamics, I think.

I second the request for a Pianet N for Pianoteq. I think it should be pretty easy, because it sounds quite similar to a Wurlitzer, as well it should, because it uses the same principle for tone generation. (reeds with electro-static pickup).

Greg. (who has a real Wurlitzer and a real Combo Pianet(~=Pianet N))

Re: Native Instruments release Clavinet/Pianet ....

is the Combo Pianet not more of a Clavinet E7 with a Pianet T ?
I could be wrong....

I believe the Pianet N has "sticky foam pads" on its hammers, which strike and then un-stick from the reeds, resulting in that rather odd sound it has... I love it, personally - Roxy Music, The Stranglers and Van der Graaf Generator would not have been the same without it!

Re: Native Instruments release Clavinet/Pianet ....

Feline,
The Combo Pianet is just a sticky pad Pianet in a more compact form than the Pianet N.  (there may be other differences that I'm not aware of though)

You are thinking of the Clavinet Duo.

I agree - the sticky pads give it a distinctive sound. However, overall, I feel that it sounds very similar to a Wurltizer. It may even be possible to create a Pianet N sound by tweaking Pianeteq's existing Wurlitzer instrument.

Re: Native Instruments release Clavinet/Pianet ....

Btw, I am well aware of the differences between the Pianet N/Combo Pianet and the Pianet T. The Pianet T has a COMPLETELY different sound - it uses rubber pads that have natural "stickiness" - they are not impregnated with any adhesive. They also have electro-MAGNETIC pickups.  I also own a Pianet T.

Re: Native Instruments release Clavinet/Pianet ....

Ah right! I was confusing the 'Combo' thingummy with the 'Duo'

Re: Native Instruments release Clavinet/Pianet ....

OK people, can I get a rundown on Pianet models and differences please

Hard work and guts!

Re: Native Instruments release Clavinet/Pianet ....

There's bound to be one to read somewhere on www.clavinet.com

Feline's guide goes thus:

PIANET N:
Listen to "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" by Van der Graaf Generator http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzoaWrRYg98
and Roxy Music's "Editions of You"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UODv3aCVxg

CEMBALET:
Anything from the first three Stranglers albums, e.g. (GET A) GRIP (ON YOURSELF)

PIANET T:
personally I would try WOMEN AROUND THE WORLD AT WORK by Martha and the Muffins

Re: Native Instruments release Clavinet/Pianet ....

There is, or at least was, a fantastic Hohner demo page, created by "Lenny G" (I think), which had demo recordings created by Hohner themselves. I think some of the demos were off those flexible records, sold with magazines.  I can't find the damn site at the moment though - if anyone knows where it is please post the link.

I downloaded the recordings, but I'm not sure whether I'd be violating some form of copyright if I made them available.

Simon Beck is an authority on electric pianos, and here is his site:

Thanks guys!

Yeah, sounds quite similar to Wurly.

Good finds - thanks!!

Not sure about this one - sounds too bright for a Pianet T.  If you go to that Hohner demo page, you can hear that it sounds extremely mellow.
(I think this must be the least harmonically rich electric piano ever invented!)

Re: Native Instruments release Clavinet/Pianet ....

While we're on Hohner, I think the Electra-Piano sounds very nice too - a good example is Led Zeppelin's "Down By The Seaside": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBMaSIHUatA  (also used in Stairway To Heaven) Again, sort of similar to a Wurly I guess.

Very rare indeed though I think!

Yeah, it has that lovely warm mid-range bark like a wurli, sounds almost like a synth in a way (resonant bandpass sawtooth splurge) -
the thing that really makes the Pianet distinctive to me is that you don't get that metallic plunk from a hammer hitting tines -
instead there a wierd mixture of brittle/spongey splurge as the sticky pads interact with the reeds.

And that post is related to this topic... how?

Hard work and guts!
