Ernst Heinrich Gebhardt (1832 - 1899) was a German preacher, hymn writer, and composer. He lived for many years in Ludwigsburg (Germany) and also translated Anglo-American gospel songs. Through his collections of hymns, he had a significant influence on 19th-century Christian hymn culture.
In the style of the Revival Movement, the hymn “Weinen laßt mich” addresses personal repentance and turning to God in times of spiritual distress. The composition can also serve as a musical introduction to Good Friday. Musically, the work is characterized by a simple and appealing melody with unadorned harmonies. The song was also included in the hymnbook (No. 343) of the New Apostolic Church.
