Erik Satie (1866 - 1925) was a French composer considered one of the most important precursors of modern music and minimalism. He lived and worked in Paris (France). In his compositions, he forged his own path and did not conform to conventional musical norms. He had a significant influence on 20th-century music.
Gymnopédie No. 1 is an important work of musical minimalism. The piece is characterized by a floating, rather sad quality and thus has a wistful, serious, and also gentle sound, which Satie himself described with the instruction “slow and painful/sad” (“lent et douloureux”). The title “Gymnopédie” vaguely refers to an ancient Spartan dance ritual. Gymnopédie No. 1 is a simpler and therefore popular work, but a high degree of control and expressiveness is required for a musically compelling interpretation.
