Topic: Dynamic Organ Registration Ideas

Not really sure where to put these - they're not 'performances' just initial ideas:

I can't play dynamics on a church organ like a piano (hitting keys harder for louder sound) because it's a wind instrument where keys are essentially on/off switches, but I control volume (dynamics) by pulling stops (adding sets of pipes) and using expression pedals, allowing for massive crescendos and decrescendos, just not with key attack pressure.

In your example, aria,  you do this very smoothly and nicely (by pulling stops, adding sets of pipes) . I like very much how it sounds in the Bach aria. Really good!

I have always done this , adding stops etc , but not so elegant as you do. I have always probably added to much stops….

Your nice example made me think more about how it sounds when I play in the future.
Thank you DEZ for your great example.

Bets wishes,

Stig

Your performances of these Bach masterpieces are truly beautiful. I really enjoyed them!

Especially the choice of stops.

Great work, DEZ!

Re: Dynamic Organ Registration Ideas

Another gentle piece by Petzold - pity so little of his work has survived through the ages !

Petzold's Minuet in G minor ...

Re: Dynamic Organ Registration Ideas

The theme to his 12 variations, written to teach keyboard skills to rich young women ... I give you Mozart !

Mozart - "Ah, vous dirai-je Maman"
https://forum.modartt.com/uploads.php?f...0Ideas.mp3

Simple pedal bass added (which alternates between the tonic and dominant as appropriate). Block dynamics without expression / swell pedal and use of added stops.

Re: Dynamic Organ Registration Ideas

Hi DEZ,

I like the dynamics especially in the Minuet in G. It comes in so powerfully. Wonderful!
Thank you.

btw did you listen to my dynamic playing in Largo Pergolesi ? As you so nicely said my "your future sound scapes"

Best wishes,

Stig

Simple pedal bass added. Once again block dynamics without swell but added stop.

Aah! This is really beautiful. I have played several variations but not all, and this one was too hard for me, could not play it fast enough.
Well done DEZ, you're a special musician my friend. Keep going!

btw.    I wrote a long comment, thoughts, about theatre organ sounds in your story about Cameron Carpenter Demonstrates M&O Opus 4 - Pt. 1. Added 2 videos from 2020, 2021 and named 8 other which are on YouTube. If you have time, listen to some......
Thanks to you I'm going  deep into this theatre sound world this winter with all instruments we have.

Best wishes,

Stig

Just a simple mess-around that demonstrates moving from manual to manual for dynamic contract ...

It is tricky!

It just needs an even touch, relaxed wrist and concentrated attention given to the finger changes on repeated notes keeping the hand in the same position.

Just a quick home-made tune, organ registration and experiment with the new Choir voice from Dreamtonics ...

Nice choir but to me there is too much of the choir from about 0,23 and to the end. From there I would like to hear more of the organ, feels that organ is drowning a. bit.... Could you try another version with more organ from 0,23 or less choir in volume. It's just a feeling when listening, would have put choir a bit more back, too near my face. Choir and organ is nice but I myself might take down a bit of the choir or put dem in reverb a bit more in background. Just my ideas. In general you are doing these very well.

Best wishes,

Stig

As suggested the choir has been moved further back in the mix ...

Yes, good! Now you have the balance I was missing between accompaniment/organ and singers. It is is crucial for a ”professional”, musical, and emotionally resonant performance. Proper balance ensures the organ is not drowned out, while also allowing the organ to provide necessary harmonic and rhythmic support. It transforms a performance from two separate parts into a cohesive, collaborative duet.
Well done now DEZ!
Thank you!

As only a small amateur listener in the large crowd here,  I am satisfied now and enjoying your music.

Best wishes,

Stig

Edit.              How it sounds depends a lot on different headphones. I have three different ones and they all sound different with the same song. I don't like the ones that have a lot of bass. I’m satisfied now with Grado SR125 x. Excellent treble and midrange detail.
My Beyer Dynamic 990 Pro has toooo much treble, unnatural!

Really nice registration. I like it. I think I haven't got a sound like this when I'm looking for stops to use.  Thank you DEZ.

Thanks Stig, there are so many ways to combine the stops and alter each in how it speaks that we may never find all the possible suitable registration settings ... it's a fantastic journey!

Re: Dynamic Organ Registration Ideas

Well, what can I say ... just another exercise taken from First Series of Graded Pianoforte Studies Grade 1

We all know that flue pipes are described in broad terms as Flute, Principal, and String. I never really thought the 'String' flues sounded much like strings so I decided to add tremolo (which I altered to my taste) and another stop to add weight and here's the finished result.

Does it sound like strings are accompanying the main melody played on oboe? when I say 'oboe' this is not a reed per se.
