Topic: Mics and Mix quick options in Pianoteq 9

Hey,

In Pianoteq 8, I would usually select Binaural (preferred sound-profile on my p515 speakers), and Stereophonic (prefer sound with my headphones).

It seems these quick options are no longer selectable from main page in Pianoteq 9. The way to change to Binaural is now to go into mic settings and manually change to 'virtual head'; is that right?

So the 'Stereophonic' and 'Monophonic' options are no longer available, is that correct?

Cheers, Greg

Click a mic (top of volume control slider), then select "virtual head" in the drop down

yes thanks, that's what I mentioned in my post. What I'm wondering about is accessing these settings on the main controls page; as it was in Pianoteq 8

Re: Mics and Mix quick options in Pianoteq 9

Hi Greg,

The preferred way to obtain a binaural sound is now to use the dedicated Binaural presets (such as NY Steinway D Binaural). There's one for each instrument, and Philippe adjusted them manually so that they sound as good as possible.

We made the Virtual Head available so that you can get binaural sound on other presets as well, but be aware that depending on where you place it the tonal balance will change in ways that are out of our control (just like moving your head in real life).

The "Monophonic" and "Stereophonic" options were a remnant of older versions, and they brought modifications to the sound that we were not very happy with, so they have been phased out.

Hoping you enjoy Pianoteq 9 so far!

Hi Alexis,

On the subject of the binaural option, are there any plans to allow users to provide their own HRTF?

Re: Mics and Mix quick options in Pianoteq 9

I really like the “binaural” presets, but the “binaural” sound will only be optimal when combined with a head tracker system ( without this, it's as if the piano were attached to your head and moved with it ) . It is the micro-movements of the head that spatialize the sound, as much as the position of the microphones. Technologically, I think it would be entirely possible for modartt to retrieve head movement data sent by a system such as nx wave tracker and translate it into MIDI parameters that control the position of the artificial head in real time. There is indeed a risk of stalling if the movements are too sudden, but such a system could provide very interesting realism if the head movements remain moderate.

Re: Mics and Mix quick options in Pianoteq 9

Thanks Alexis,

I will try out the binaural preset, but I usually find (almost) all my preferred presets sound better with the Binaural setting— with my particular audio setup.
So, I will stick to clicking through to the mic settings in PT9..

This does feel like a little bit of a step back for ease-of-use for me, so please take this as minor feedback on the ui updates in Pianoteq 9.
I've noticed a few other comments regarding this on this forum and YouTube, so I hope you may be receptive to updates in the future that might restore the binaural setting to the main settings page

Many thanks,
Greg.

I agree, this is a step back for me in terms of ease of use.

Re: Mics and Mix quick options in Pianoteq 9

You can remedy this yourself though. Select one of the Binaural presets, go in to the Mics panel, and in the Mic Presets dropdown, select "Save As". This allows you to create a preset form the binaural mic set up that you can select within any other preset.

Re: Mics and Mix quick options in Pianoteq 9

Thanks Daniel, though that's not a remedy to the request—it's a longer workaround that was already mentioned.
What we're talking about is quick-access to Binaural setting from the main UI page, as it is in PT8. without having to click through to mic settings.

Re: Mics and Mix quick options in Pianoteq 9

Hmm maybe it would be nice to have the mic preset dropdown appear when you right-click on the "Mics & Mix" button, similar to how you can pick effect presets by right-clicking on the little indicators in the bottom right of the UI. That would restore the number of clicks required to what we had in v8.

Side note, personally I like that there's only one Mics button in the UI now, even if it comes at the cost of an extra click

building up on Daniel ‘s workaround, you can save all the binaural new presets with any adjusted parameters as fxp file then in parallel to pianoteq you just launch and let open a file manager window pointing to the personal presets folder . That way you kill 2 birds with 1 stone . This allows to navigate through your preferred instruments and launch any in binaural mode with only 1 click . Other idea when you play live gigs is to use a midi pad controller that allows you to associate midi control to knobs or pad buttons .( there are some cheap and good devices available) then in the midi options section using full features midi mappings , you can program your pad so that it can launch any associated binaural preset with just one click . These pads when play live are a must have . Some live performers use also feet midi devices that perform similar functions . In all cases I can tell you an additional midi controller for automation changes your life , specially with pianoteq thks to the exhaustive midi mappings. Believe me when you have tried it, you cannot live without it .
