Topic: New Bach Prelude n 13 in F sharp Maj, BWV 858 Pianoteq

Dear Friends,

In the wet and foggy Italian winter today I continue with my little marathon to discover Bach's WTC 1. Hoping you will enjoy these videos and the not so brief explanations of the various pieces. I wish you happy listening.
The nature-painting moods of the C-sharp and E-major preludes have new noble counterparts in this prelude and the fugue of similar mood which follows. As the key of F-sharp stands between E-major and C#-major, brighter than the former but less glowing than the latter (compare the passage in F# in the middle of the C# prelude), so does the F# prelude form a natural middle member between the one in E, fresh as spring, and the other in C#, rich with summer glow. Although strictly in two voices from beginning to end,  till it is full of hfe, entrancing up to the very last note, moving onward in so natural a manner, that one always lingers over it with renewed rapture. The
gently swinging opening motive which is immediately taken up by the under voice, at once calls to mind the mood of the prelude in E. This indeed is the only figuration motive which the under voice repeats alternately with the upper one: the former proceeds quietly, in quaver counts, by diatonic steps — in long descending and ascending lines, producing an effect similar
to that of the crotchet movement in the C#-major prelude — while the upper voice carries out a syncopated motive of enchanting grace while listening to it one can only think of the woods, of flowers, and of the song of birds.

A jolly piece well executed and a delight to hear the 'birds' trill on the branches !

The only critique I would dare offer is to watch the use of the sustain pedal on the section where the bass remains on F# - you don't want to start to muddy the clarity this piece demands. It detracts from the portrayal of the fresh county air!

Thanks for continuing to share your epic journey through Bach's WTC Bk 1.

beautiful job!  you are getting close to the 1/2 way point.  looking forward to the fugue ...

A really beautiful interpretation. I have always liked your tempo, and, people don’t know what Bach would say about tempo for these pieces. He perhaps never heard any one play his pieces?

Nice touch and  elegant. Those well played trills remind me of spring and Handel's The Cuckoo and Nightingale. This Prelude 13, with your way of playing, could be a beautiful way to welcome spring. And the 2 last bars are beautiful.
Using Google translate I try to say: Bel tocco! Molto elegante!
Thank you carmelo.

You said you like Händel too so here the Cockoo and Nightingale, if interested and have time. The highlight is from about 1,11…and from 2,03....….) With Organteq 1 2022) I thought of Handel when listening to your trills.

Dear DEZ,
at first I could not believe what you had written.... I am always very careful and stingy in the use of the sustain pedal with BACH: I prefer to bind everything with my hands because it gives a better sound less wide. Instead it was there, it was all there I listened again and heard that on that F# the pedal .... It must have been really automatic because held for 2 or 3 notes of the 'chord it didn't jar us harmonically but : Damn, like putting on a beautiful spring painting with flowers and birds a puddle....
Thank you for your comment, I will be more careful next time.

Thank you very much for your comment Budo.
Although numerically I am just past the halfway point (I am on the thirteenth out of twenty-four), I will soon have to tackle a very very difficult prelude and fugue...No. 20 BWV 865 which alone will require the efforts of 3 / 4 preludes and fugues done so far.
I'll really give it my all.

Wow Stig! Your performance of Handel's The Cockoo and Nightingale is truly beautiful.
I have listened to that concert for organ and orchestra by different authors but your performance is really really good!
You made me want to put on something by Handel, I don't know if they'll like it but I'm working on it.
I always thank you for your support and encouragement!!!!
Thanks and greetings from Italy!
