Topic: Christmas song from Finland (Organteq 2)

Holidays are coming...
This song early came to be regarded as a Christmas song in Finland, despite the fact that the text does not refer to Christmas, but only to winter, snow and sleigh rides.

Melody by Johan Fredrik Berwald, 1845. Text by Z. Zopelius (Klang min vackra bjällra)

It is a bit in same style as Leroy Anderson   Sleigh Ride. Or the song Jingle bells….

Because I mentioned Leroy Anderson and said this  Finnish piece  is a bit in same style as Leroy Anderson, I would like to draw your attention to the fact, that Sleigh Ride was composed one summer!!!!

According to the composer's widow Eleanor Anderson, "Leroy didn't set out to write a Christmas piece when he wrote 'Sleigh Ride.'  His intentions were to convey the entire winter season through the imagery of a sleigh ride, much in the way that Mozart did with his piece of the same name."

So - During a July heat wave and drought in 1946, he spent a summer in a cottage. Leroy was digging trenches to try to find some old pipes coming from a spring.  He began composing several tunes, including Sleigh Ride (Sleðaferð), in which he envisioned as a musical depiction of the winter season long ago.
Sleigh Ride” was first performed on May 4, 1948 in Symphony Hall, Boston as an extra at a Pops concert conducted by Arthur Fiedler.  Lyrics by Mitchell Parish were added in 1950.

Some 75 years after Leroy Anderson created Sleigh Ride, the composition is still ranked as one of the 10 most popular pieces of Christmas music worldwide and frequently the #1 most popular holiday song in the United States according to ASCAP.  This is in spite of the fact that the word "Christmas" is never mentioned in the lyrics which Mitchell Parish wrote several years after Anderson finished the composition.
Leroy Anderson June 29, 1908 – May 18, 1975

This ”most popular holiday song in the United States according to ASCAP.  This is in spite of the fact that the word "Christmas" is never mentioned in the lyrics” is the same with my Christmas song. Not a word about Christmas, but still popular. The similarities.

Re: Christmas song from Finland (Organteq 2)

This is lovely - had not heard of it before. Thanks for another delightful discovery, Stig! I wondered if Johan was any relation to the great Franz Berwald, and yes, a quick visit to Wikipedia tells me he was a cousin.
By coincidence, I've been working on my own Sleigh Ride - hope to post it later today.
