Topic: Not pianoteq: Bach and Schoenberg

Hi, I've posted my Pianoteq work in this forum a few times, and got some positive responses.  I hope people don't mind me sharing something different today.  (Please let me know if this is not appropriate.  I promise not to get upset if a moderator decides to delete this post.)

Since covid, I've missed working in the concert hall -- but I've learned to appreciate the full range of possibilities from acoustic instruments through sampled and modelled instruments and even on to fully synthesized sounds.  It's been a good time to experiment and learn new things -- and then look back and see how far we've come these last two years.

Don't worry, I think Pianoteq is great and I'll definitely come back to it in the next few months.  But for today, here's a mix of the old and the new: Bach on an acoustic piano, and Schoenberg rendered 100% artificially.

I certainly don't object to hearing non-Pianoteq performances, especially when the quality is this high! However, perhaps it would be more appropriate to post these in the main forum? Anyway, the Bach is wonderful, and the recording has the satisfying 'recital hall' sound that I'm always trying to get with Pianoteq (getting closer in v7, but not quite there yet). Absolutely love the animation, you must have gone to a lot of trouble with that. Schoenberg is just brilliant! I have to confess that Schoenberg's longer atonal works tend to drive me nuts because he seems to be going round in circles, but I do enjoy the shorter pieces. Your 'orchestration' really brings them to life.

On the one hand, it was actually recorded in a nice medium sized hall (about 600 seats).  But on the other hand, I cheated a bit with this one.  The original recording was a bit too dry for my taste (the microphones were fairly close to the piano and didn't capture the ambience of the room).  I added just a tiny bit of extra reverb using gverb in Audacity.  Hopefully not enough to be obvious, just something to give it a little extra space.

The next time I go back to Pianoteq, I think I might try the same trick: see what happens if I combine the internal reverb with just a hint of an external reverb plugin.

I'm with you on that one.  Schoenberg fascinates me, but the larger scale works don't quite take hold of me the same way something like the Berg violin concerto does.
