Topic: Do I need bass compressor pedal

Hi guys,
I'm experimenting with a new sound, and I want to find a bass compressor pedal. I like the BOSS pedal from here https://theguruchoice.com/audio-equipme...or-pedal/. Is it worth buying a pedal or can I get by with software? Will there be a difference in sound? Or is it not worth the extra money?

Re: Do I need bass compressor pedal

It depends a bit. If it’s for live use, I can see where a pedal like the BOSS might come in handy, but if you’re staying inside the computer, I can’t really think of good arguments to go the pedal route. Apart from the fact that it’s a bit of a hassle to integrate such a pedal into your system, with the AD/DA-conversion and the cabling and all that, there are numerous very good software solutions these days that’ll give you just about any type of compression you want.

A wise choice will also depend on the specific sound you’re after of course. Starting with the Pianoteq instrument you want to compress. An electric piano, for example, is an entirely different beast when it comes to compression than an acoustic instrument, even when we’re talking modeled versions of the two. And do you want analog-sounding compression or pristine digital compression? Quite some difference between the two, so knowing precisely what you want, is the first step to being able to make the right decision.

So, in order to get the most helpful answers here, I think it’ll help if you give us a bit more information on how you use Pianoteq (live, stand-alone or as a plug-in inside a DAW), what sort of sound you’re thinking of and which characteristics of the dynamic processing are important to you.
