Topic: Fp30+Pianoteq+Surround System

Hello,
i've using pianoteq for a little while with a roland fp 30, if i use it with my pc heaphones everthink works fine, but if i try to connect it to my surround sound system (a/v receiver Onkyo 5.1 mod: tx Sr705 with speakers Wharfedale) going throgh my pc via hdmi or rca, i get a very strong imput lag and sound distortion.!
I've read online that i could use an external audio card, is that correct?
I would really appreciate if you could send me some information about it.
Thanks

Re: Fp30+Pianoteq+Surround System

Hi OldSoulDax! I would lower the output from PC/audio interface to the Onkyo AV amp first.

Regarding latency, I found on modern AV amps that to bypass the processor was the only way to avoid it. On a Yamaha AV amp for example, there was just ONE pre-set, '2 channel audio' that I could use without added latency. Look for something similar, 2 channel or if your lucky 5 channel stereo might work. Unfortunately you won't be able to have 5.1 with Pianoteq. You might though be able to turn off effects but I doubt it.

Anyway good luck, hope this helps.

Nick

Re: Fp30+Pianoteq+Surround System

I had no luck with a Pioneer receiver. The internal sound processing takes too much time to play any kind of instrument in real time. As MeDorian pointed out, you need to figure out if it's possible to bypass surround processing by using 2 channel audio.

Re: Fp30+Pianoteq+Surround System

Hi MeDorian and Zaskar,
thank you for your replay.
i did try would you suggest, but unfortunately it did not solve the problem.

I've also traied by direct imput/Pure mode, wich deactivets everything but stero mode/sound, and still did not solvethe problem.

Is any of you two tried using an esternal sound card?

Thanks anyways

Re: Fp30+Pianoteq+Surround System

An audio interface/sound card as you mentioned will not help also. I use Asio4All as my preference with a Hi Fi amp and also a very old Yamaha AV amp which I can turn all effects off and no latency issues.

There still might be a setting on your Onkyo but I have not read the specs.

The distortion you mentioned my guess would be too high audio from PC, my PC volume is usually set to 50%.

Nick

EDIT: I wonder, and now hopefully the distortion has gone if you lower the PC volume, that you could try again RCA or phono (as I call them). HDMI might be the issue as it's a multi channel audio connector. Worth ago maybe?

Re: Fp30+Pianoteq+Surround System

@OldSoulDax
I use a Focusrite 2i2, but that doesn't solve your problem. The latency occurs within your receiver. Those devices are not built for real time audio and they don't need to if you're just watching movies.

Here's an article about audio delay in soundbars. It's not exactly about receivers but it describes the problem:

Re: Fp30+Pianoteq+Surround System

I agree Zaskar, modern AV amps are just too clever. A 90's Denon AV are the best.

Re: Fp30+Pianoteq+Surround System

I've installed the Aiso4all driver, an that solved the latency problem and slightly improved the sound however is still quite dirty and not crystal clear.
I also change the volume, as you suggest, but did not make any difference.

thanks for try to help

sigh....

Re: Fp30+Pianoteq+Surround System

Are you using a line out port, a speaker port, or a headphone port from the computer.  The first is always best.  Some sound cards allow you to dymanically switch a headphone port into being a line out port.  Also, at the receiver, you might be able to change settings on it to indicate that it's a headphone port instead of a line out port.  Also, do you have trouble with the sound from other applications or just pianoteq on the receiver?  If it's just pianoteq, that can be fixed in settings, but if streaming services/video playback are equally bad, it's either a soundcard setting or a receiver setting.
