Topic: Akai MPK ROAD 88 note controller?

Hi All,

does anyone have any experience of trying the Akai MPK Road 88?

https://www.akaipro.com/mpk-road-88-mpkroad88xus

I'm interested in it as a controller to replace my Yamaha P150, because it has two criteria that I require, 1. A flat top with no buttons/knobs where I can put my computer keyboard (or another keyboard/synth) (usually there are all sorts of buttons and knobs on top); and 2. aftertouch.

Thanks in advance.

Ian

I notice there is a recall for a problem with the key lubricant:

Thanks for spotting that. It looks like they are working on it and the new units are being manufactured. I'm not so urgent for a new controller, but, perhaps in a few months once the new units are ready I'll look in to it again. Some of the reviews seem pretty enthusiastic.

One thing I'd like to know is whether it is possible to adjust its velocity curve; the manual does not mention it.

Re: Akai MPK ROAD 88 note controller?

I had one that I had to return because of the recall. I really liked it and would have gone for a replacement, but Akai unfortunately decided to drop the product entirely. I bought a VPC1 instead, which has a superior keybed IMO, even though I found the Road 88 to be much better than the competing controllers I've tried. I miss the onboard sound card, the pitch/bend wheels and the cool Rhodes-look (I have the real thing), but the VPC1 is still a substantial upgrade. Most controllers are compromises and I don't want to compromise on the feel/experience. You can always buy synth/DAW controllers as compliment. They are cheap in comparison and they get outdated every second year or so. I can't see that happening to my VPC1.
