Topic: CPU Suddenly overloading

Never happened before... first I noticed way more latency and then over loaded CPU which never happened before... weird ... Mid 2009 Mac Book Pro...2.66 GHz Intel Core Duo..8 GB1067 MHz DDR3...Hmmmmm... Didn't have connected to internet or running anything else as usual...

Pianoteq 8, most pianos, Studiologic 73 Piano, Casio Px-560M, PX-S 3000, PX-S 1100, PX-S 7000, Mac i27 and MacBook Pro M3, SS Logic SSL 2

Re: CPU Suddenly overloading

10 years old computer... be realistic please. Yes some of the latest improvements to Pianoteq's sound engine do require more CPU, and 2.66 GHz is a bit measly by today's standards. Try disabling the reverb and use an external one, perhaps?

Re: CPU Suddenly overloading

I've also got a MacBook from 2009, it has no problems running Pianoteq. It's not only the cpu that counts, also the os.
Macos is well designed regarding audio performance.

Only thing that caused problems for me was finder.
Finder tends to index everything on a Mac, but this can happen at times you really don't want it to happen, so I simply disabled it.

Re: CPU Suddenly overloading

I am being realistic... it worked perfect a couple days ago..

Also run Pianoteq on my iMac  27inch 2017...4.2 GHz Intel Core i7 with 8 gig 2400 MHz DD4.

Thanks for the tip Mr. Roland Ill have at it later when I get back to that computer If I can figure that out.

Of course a new/ newer dedicated Mac laptop would be nice as Pianoteq is worth it , and a smaller size (foot print) would help stream line the grand piano shell set up I have in the living room. Fun stuff.

Re: CPU Suddenly overloading

Wait, the SAME version worked fine a few days ago, or you did an update of Pianoteq and then you noticed the change in performance? This wasn't exactly clear from the first post, so sorry for jumping to conclusions.

It worked fine the other day with most recent upgrade so no version change... I’ll try the finder disable later...

Re: CPU Suddenly overloading

So no luck...got rid of so much stuff on the computer... tried Addictive Piano I have on it and played fine... then tried Pianoteq 5 I still have on it and was fine... So latest Pianoteq 6.5.1 is what is sucking up all the CPU... when I switch to 8 note polyphony it will play without shutting down..of course,,, interesting

Re: CPU Suddenly overloading

What if you try a few versions back, see what happens?

Re: CPU Suddenly overloading

Thanks good idea... but how do I go back? 6.5 worked perfect... I think I played 6.5.1 when I first loaded and was fine...

Re: CPU Suddenly overloading

You can just change the version number in the link...

https://www.pianoteq.com/download?file=...p_v650.exe

For example.

Re: CPU Suddenly overloading

One thing that also might be a problem is your settings file.
On my odroid-xu4 it got corrupted, but Pianoteq still worked.
I found out it was bad because some pianos sounded terrible.
I got rid of the settings file and reactivated my license.
Problem solved.

Says I am not allowed to access ... At least Pianoteq 5 is playable for now on my laptop... I'll look into a newer computer soon if I have to

Re: CPU Suddenly overloading

This happened to me too with Pianoteq 6.5.2 / OS X 10.13.6 (Patched) on MacBook Pro mid2009@2.8GHz.

I made sure everything that could affect performance (e.g. Spotlight) was not running, but it didn't work.
It couldn't even handle 10 voices.

Now I tested 6.5.3, but it didn't look great either.
The "Audio load" graph under the CPU tab of the settings gets filled with red dots and lines; this does not happen on 6.4.1, where I can do a full-range glissando without a glitch.

I haven't used 6.5.0 and 6.5.1, but I suspect it's Pianoteq 6.5.x's problem.
Maybe the thing about CPU requirements in the version history is related.

I guess I have to keep using 6.4.1 on old Macs.

[Edit: I see there are already a number of posts about 6.5's performance in other threads. Looks like 6.4.1 is indeed the only way for me.]

Re: CPU Suddenly overloading

Pianoteq sounds superb in 6.5. Maybe your audio buffer is a bit too keen (to an unnecessary degree) for the latest version and your CPU?

Try a slight increase in the the audio buffer size under devices. Try increasing it until the problem disappears.

Re: CPU Suddenly overloading

CPU is still way to high .. but at least it is playable now... was really low in 5 version.. I’ll keep that version in my laptop just in case.

Re: CPU Suddenly overloading

More accuracy and improved models should require more CPU juice, that's a given.

True that.. about time I get a newer computer for this particular set up anyway and faster interface.
