Topic: Anybody else getting ridiculous latency with 6.4 in Reaper?

6.4 standalone seems to be working fine for me. But I just gave it a quick try in Reaper, and it was hopeless. Unbelievable latency! It may have been something I forgot to check, so I'll look into it. Just wondering if anyone else has had similar problems.

Re: Anybody else getting ridiculous latency with 6.4 in Reaper?

Just checked that for you now.
Zero problems in that regard within Reaper VSTi and VST3 with up to date Reaper and Pianoteq and Win10.

Perhaps a Mac issue?

Re: Anybody else getting ridiculous latency with 6.4 in Reaper?

I'm in Win10. Not sure I have the latest version of Reaper, so will check that before I do anything else.

Re: Anybody else getting ridiculous latency with 6.4 in Reaper?

Go to Reaper's Preferences->Audio->Device, and tell us how things are set up there. What's the audio system selected there? It should be either WASAPI or ASIO, ASIO preferrably.

Hard work and guts!

Re: Anybody else getting ridiculous latency with 6.4 in Reaper?

Well, this is weird. ASIO settings and Reaper version both fine. The latency I was getting was with some settings that I'd made with Pianoteq 6.3.1 - so I opened a new project, rebuilt the settings from scratch, and (touch wood) no latency! Anyway, thanks for suggestions, I will post again if I get any more problems.
(Edit: of course, when I say 'no latency' I mean 'not enough to be troublesome' )

Re: Anybody else getting ridiculous latency with 6.4 in Reaper?

Update: as far as I can tell, the latency issue had something to do with CPU usage when setting up multiple tracks. I had been doing this to test and compare a number of different settings. As I would not normally use more than 2 or 3 tracks for recording in Reaper with Pianoteq, this shouldn't be too much of a problem for me. If I do run into difficulties, there are workarounds such as importing audio or midi, so I'm not worried.

Re: Anybody else getting ridiculous latency with 6.4 in Reaper?

Just checked, Davric. (Evil Dragon is a long time Reaper-user who knows quite everything about it, so any questions you might have with PT and Reaper should be easily cleared up here). It depends on your machine. I have a today ancient 4core PC from 2012 (which is supposed to run another 10 years at least^^). Tested it shortly: this old machine  can easily manage 7 instances of Pianoteq playing all at the same time the new Bechstein grand with very low latency settings of my Steinberg UR-22 USB sound card. So I guess you won't run into any problems making songs with Pianoteq in Reaper. Besides importing audio or midi Reaper has a very streamlined engine, and you can easily switch off instances of plugins until you need them again, etc.

Re: Anybody else getting ridiculous latency with 6.4 in Reaper?

Exactly, it depends on the machine (and yes, I have certainly learned a great deal from EvilDragon's posts, as I'm sure many others have ). As I say, I'm not worried. I'm confident that my computer can cope with the small-scale projects that I'm doing at the moment. At some point I may consider getting a more powerful computer if my projects become more ambitious.
