Topic: Which Cello Plugin to use (with Pianoteq)?

Hi,
I am looking for a Cello VSTi. It does not have to be modeled. I know there are many out there but many are quite complicated to use, requiring either a separate sample player software or a USB dongle, which I don't want to use.

I am looking for something that is easy to use. Switch on - work. All this software stuff makes my head ache and kills my inspiration. That's why I love the Pianoteq plugin so much: It is very easy to start up and use.

I am looking for a solution with a price point up to 200Eur. It does not have to sound perfect. Just no dongle and no extra software to start and control and learn.

If it sounds nice in combination with Pianoteq, that'd be a bonus.

What do you recommend?

Thank you.
Felix

I ended up buying the Embertone Blakus Cello.

I know that's precisely what I said I did not want - a sample set to be used with a separate sample player.

It just sounds so amazingly good and is a perfect fit for the Pianoteq - at least it requires no Dongle.

You bought the best out there.

By the way, here is what I did with it. And the piano way in the background is, of course, the wonderful Pianoteq:

(Not really sure what to do to embed the player right here. Does not seem to work out of the box with the iframe embed code.)

Embedded player shows up just fine.

I feel the cello lacks emotion - massage that vibrato more! At moments sounds quite disconnected too, almost synthy, as if it's using bow change legato (or no legato at all) all the time (which is not what you'd typically do on a cello on a moderately quick succession of notes).

But the lyrics, hahaha!

This Blakus Cello is really impressive! https://youtu.be/inkcek1bFJw Are there alternatives around? Maybe some VSL products?

Added: found some answers here http://www.reddit.com/r/WeAreTheMusicMa...cello_vst/ Seems that VSL SOLO STRINGS can be the winner in this area.

VSL is lagging behind what Blakus Cello managed to achieve sound-wise, I feel.

Thanks a lot for your feedback. I agree with almost all of it and now I wonder why I rendered this as finished. I recorded the Cello midi while on the road in South Africa and was using one of those tiny 25-key keyboards without any expression wheels. I assume that later I just forgot about the cello issues because I was so focused on trying to get the vocals right.

I will revise the cello track. Thanks to your feedback it will be better.

Hello All,

Uploaded to the Other Files section, you will find a performance of Robert Schumann's Traumarei for 'cello and piano.  The 'cello part is played on the Gofriller Cello in Kontakt 5 format, and the piano is Pianoteq 5 D4 Steinway AB Concert Recording preset.  The way I produced this recording was as follows:

1) Played the 'cello part, live with no metronome into Digital Performer 9, modulating the vibrato with the modulation wheel.  The note slides are effected by one's choice to play very legato, with slightly overlapping notes.

2)  I became the "accompanist" by recording the piano accompaniment in real time, as the 'cello part played with highly rubato timing.

Although the Gofriller Cello software is no longer sold, new, you might be able to find it on eBay; the instrument is highly flexible when played in real time with no edits.
