Topic: My new FXP

Hi guys,

Please check out my new FXP named 7-04-2014.

What I tried to do with this was to get a very accurate and clear concert grand sound. I made the hammers pretty hard, but also took down the harshest overtones so that the sound would be clear but not too bright. I also really tried to make sure the piano was consistent through the whole range without an obvious break between bass and treble coloration.

I think I have achieved what I was trying to! I compared this to some of the best recordings I could think of, and I do believe it's in the same league. (Sound-wise, of course. My playing in the demos is just messing around.)

Re: My new FXP

Playing (kind of beginner pieces) right now, yery nice fxp! although being a beginner i certainly can't fully appreciate... what are the pieces you play in the demo audio files?

(bonus points for original name :3 :3 )

/*edit */ Just wondering about a small detail about the copyright of .fxp files: when i click on "more" it says:

Copyright (c) 2014 Modartt

....Rachel created the fxp right? ...also, what about the year - is it based on the version of pianoteq, or the date the fxp was made? (just curious)

That's strange, are you sure you are reading Rachel's fxps? When I load any of the four variants of My_Steinway*, I can read: "Author: Rachel Jimenez" - the word "copyright" does not appear - whereas if I load for example D4 Daily Practice it reads "Author: Copyright (c) 2014 Modartt".

They were all 4 created on June 2014.

Re: My new FXP

Oh, i'm sorry.... i was talking about info on the site (fxp corner, or "More" button on link)

Sorry for any confusion.

Re: My new FXP

Ah, I see. If you click on the question mark in the fxp corner, you get for example "Author: rjpianist c Rachel Jimenez" for the first one,  "Author: Philippe Guillaume c Rachel Jimenez" for the second one etc. How do you access the "More" you are talking? I didn't find it...

EDIT: oups, sorry, what a confusion, I messed up with other threads and was talking about other fxps... that's probably the consequence of yesterdays disaster for our country (I mean, football)

Heh. Hi delt. But there seem to be several possible ways to get to FXP info.

Edit: I looked into the FXP by Rachel, and it seems she just did not overwrite the author info.

Exactly, we were talking about different fxp's, there are several possible ways to get to the fxp info and Rachel did not overwrite the author info in her last fxp. I think it's too simple, we need to make it a bit more confusing.

Re: My new FXP

Hi everybody!

Yeah, oops. I forgot to edit the text info this time. Usually I remember.

As for the pieces, they are: the theme to Beethoven's 32 Variations in C minor, the beginning of the Rachmaninoff C sharp minor Prelude, and then a portion of the Chopin Waltz in C sharp minor.

I'm still really happy with this FXP after a night of sleep, so I think it's a keeper!

I don't want to sound like I'm taking any credit, by the way. Obviously the glory goes to Philippe and the whole PianoTeq team. PianoTeq is an absolutely incredible piece of software. I am in awe of the imagination and technical expertise that have gone into it!

I think that the combo of PianoTeq 5 and all the possible customizations makes for the most compelling software piano in existence. I think people could listen to recordings of this fxp, for instance, and get lost in the music without any feeling of something being "wrong" with the sound.

Rachel

Love your new FXP.  I have standard not pro and am wondering if you adjusted string length on a note by note basis?  When I look at string length I just see one entry of 3.5.

Bill

Re: My new FXP

Rachel, it is a very beautifull preset. Thank you for your work.

Can I ask you why do you set the dynamic to 29? Don't we lose some expressivity here? Is it because it is a "recording" preset?

Thanks

Bill

I think the preset will sound exactly the same from pro to standard version

Re: My new FXP

billd: 3.5 gave me the overall harmonic resonance I was looking for, but I did still have to tweak some specific notes to get rid of some harsher overtones.

stamkorg: I was feeling like some notes were unpredictably soft, and that was fixed by setting dynamics to 29. However, I think the right thing to do is put it back to 30 and continue to work on my velocity curve or just get more used to the instrument.

I confirm, this is 100% correct.

Re: My new FXP

I think this is not what he is asking.

Re: My new FXP

Yes vjau you are correct.  I know that the fxp will sound the same on standard as written on pro but want to know if I could have created it in standard.  In other words did Rachel use note by note settings not available to me.  i guess I'm starting to think of another upgrade.

Bill

Re: My new FXP

Yep. Like I said, yes I did use the note by note settings to make further adjustments to several notes.

I also did a lot of note by note edits in the spectrum profile editor.

Re: My new FXP

Well I'm a pavlov dog here, as soon as I saw the title of My new fxp I knew it was a Rachel update and start salivating.

This is the most impresssed I've been with Pianoteq so far, the tone is beautiful and balanced and the overtones are to hear them to believe them. The Rach demo is omg, the beautiful decay with those overtones then it comes the soft part and is such a not so bright but not dark at all soft tone that feels familiar to the strong part but different at the same time, the is constant on the whole piano.

That was a great idea of bringing up the hammer hardness and fixing the spectrum later. As I can't do that on my acoustic, Im usually reducing hammer hardness.

I wonder how much detail have you put into this, you are a perfectionist, ty for that. A lot.

Please, consider in the future, make FXP for the Bluethner and other pianos, I think they have a lot of potential.

Sorry for the France defeat Phillip. I thought they were going to win but they lacked hunger in that match, I coudnt believe they were going home and not fighitng like a no tomorrow game like Colombia did.

Re: My new FXP

Wow still impressed about how the sound moves and decay. love that long decay and the treble is the best ever.

Re: My new FXP

Thanks, Rohade. Um, yeah, I'm a perfectionist. My husband thinks I'm insane the way I sit there playing each note over and over again. I've been playing PianoTeq 5 every night from about 8pm to 1am since it came out in May.

Re: My new FXP

I think perfectionist is the only way, thanks for that!

Pianoteq made me appreciate the piano sound even more, and your FXP made the appreciate Pianoteq a lot more as well.

As usual, I'm a fan.

Re: My new FXP

After a whole day comparing it to other presets and FXP I think Modartt should include this by default on Pianoteq.

Plese keep them coming, even for other pianos.

Thanks, Rohade. I'll never be done tweaking, but if I get this one even just a teeny bit better, I will approach Modartt with that request. I am encouraging all of my students to get PianoTeq, but I wouldn't expect most of them to be willing to spend more than what the Stage version costs. It would be nice if they could use my preset.

Re: My new FXP

Request to RJ or anyone who has the Pro version -- could you save this exact same preset but based on the K2 and Blüthner? Simply freeze all parameters and switch instruments, then save as new preset.... would that work?

If you can do it, and post the fxp's, thanks very much!!!

That's not how it works......the settings are carefully set for each note and for the D4 specifically. The other grands are completely different models that behave differently, copying the settings wouldn't achieve what you're looking for.

Re: My new FXP

Hi Delt. I could do that and send it to you by email if you like, but njaremko is right. It probably wouldn't make sense to apply it to other instruments. I edited note by note based on the overtones that I was hearing and didn't like. Those changes would be completely different on the Bluthner and the K2.

Re: My new FXP

A small criticism on this (otherwise magnificent) preset: the D an octave below the middle C has too much "bite" to it. Probably hammer hardness, but i can't see note-per-note since i have pianoteq standard and not pro.

Keep up the amazing work, RJ!!

Thanks, delt! I just uploaded another. Let me know what you think of the D now. There are lots of other refinements too, but I spent a lot more time on that register in particular.

Hello Rjpianist

Thank you for your fxp (2014c). To me it sounds awesome – it is, to me, more soft than before. And thank you for sharing your knowledge. I am not a pianist(my teacher said I will never be a pianist), but this fxp will make me play more.

I have to wholeheartedly agree: what the heck. Telling a music student they won't amount to much is the most sure-fire way to ensure exactly that (that, and forcing them to play the recorder). Almost no human is without musical talent, and learning an instrument is more than anything else hard work rather than a mythical gift.

Could you post a recording that uses this new preset? This way, we better know what you are hearing and trying to achieve. Thanks.

Re: My new FXP

I just uploaded yet another version. WITH demos.

I just recorded that Schubert tonight. It is one of the most beautiful excerpts of music ever written. (In my opinion of course.)
