I have a feature suggestion for Mac OS-X. The use of Pianoteq as standard program to open midifiles!

Yes, that would be nice. I just checked and (using the Get Info dialogue in the finder) you can get double-clicking midi files to open up Pianoteq but Pianoteq loads the default file rather than the target file. So you have to drag and drop the file on the Pianoteq window to load it.

Not quite chopping wood and hauling water, but one unnecessary step and not the expected behaviour.

Check the help. I don't use mac os, but if you can choose what command to be run when clicking on a midi file, just use pianoteq --play-and-quit --midi (or just --play)

$ pianoteq --help
...
 --midi FILENAME   : load a midi file
...
 --play            : immediately start playing the midi file
 --play-and-quit   : start playing the midi file, and quit when it ends

This would be useful for piano midis, but not so much for midi files containing other instruments.

It's hard for me to understand, but there are actually instruments other than piano.

You should hear what a piano/drums/bass midi sounds like in Pianoteq with midi set to "any channel".  Ugh.
