Giovanni Gastoldi (1556 - 1622) was a prominent Italian composer of the late Renaissance. He lived and worked for many years in Mantua (Italy), where he served as a composer, singer and Kapellmeister at the ducal Basilica of Santa Barbara. He composed sacred music, madrigals and balletti. The balletti were light, dance-like madrigals that served as a model for composers throughout Europe.
‘In dir ist Freude’ is a well-known sacred song with a rousing melody. The composition was originally published in 1591 as ‘A lieta vita’ (To a Joyful Life) with a secular text in Gastoldi’s collection ‘Balletti a cinque voci’, a series of cheerful dance songs. In 1594, Cyriacus Schneegaß replaced the secular love text with a sacred poem. In the new text, “In You There Is Joy in All Suffering”, Jesus Christ is addressed as the source of joy and as the Saviour even in difficult circumstances. The hymn is also included in the New Apostolic Church’s Youth Hymn Book (We Praise You) under No. 43b.
We released this recording several years ago. We have now created a new mix of the old recording using Organteq 2.
