Topic: Touchscreens

I'm looking at getting a 22" 1920 x 1080 touchscreen for my setup.  Some of the controls will be too small to use on the Pianoteq window at that resolution.

I'd mount it in place of the sheet music stand using the monitor VESA mount and then add a short ledge directly underneath the monitor so that I can still use paper sheet music if need be.

Any considerations for an interface that might be optimized for touchscreen so that I wouldn't have to have a computer keyboard and mouse?

Re: Touchscreens

You could rotate the screen to portrait, physically and in your graphics settings, then set the resolution to 800x600, PTQ will then scale to the whole width of the screen and most of the height (if you set up your GPU/Monitor scaling feature) so the buttons would be much easier for you to touch.

Re: Touchscreens

A little off topic, but the keyboard stand and music rest in your photo is exactly what I am looking for...looks to me like the music rest, and monitor stands are all attached as one unit correct? Can you post some informtation about this stand? Thanks

Keegan

Re: Touchscreens

Graham:  Thanks for the suggestion.  I was hoping to use a ledge underneath the monitor for paper sheet music music.  Would look a little odd if the ledge was on the side when the monitor rotates.  The design I have in mind won't allow for rotation anyway.

clementi_clementine:  The stand is an On-Stage W8700:

Obviously I didn't use some parts.

The sheet music stand was custom designed to fit the WS8700

Re: Touchscreens

I was curious about how big the interface would be without rotation, so I just tried it on my 21" in 800x600,
the interface is quite large, even the spectrum profile sliders look usable if I had a touchscreen.

Also I just realised the interface will be the same size, rotated or not, only thing is the on screen keyboard is not visible in landscape mode, but with your setup that should not be an issue.

try it out when you get your monitor.

Re: Touchscreens

I hope everyone will keep us posted on their experiences with PianoTeq and touch-screen monitors.

Re: Touchscreens

Will do, I'm just about ready to order one.

Re: Touchscreens

I received the 21.5" HP Compaq L2105tm touchscreen monitor yesterday.

http://www.spacmann.net/images/IMG_2737.jpg

I'm using it with XP and it works quite well.  For the most part, using my finger on the Pianoteq interface at the monitor's native 1920 x 1080 resolution works just fine.  Adjusting the velocity curve, EQ and other inputs that require a more precise input work great with the included stylus.

As you can see, I'm running a bit short of space in my corner (the big, fat cat doesn't help), so I designed a replacement music stand that incorporates a 100mm VESA monitor mount.  The mount is adjustable for height, +/- 15 degree tilt and swivel.  Underneath the monitor is a ledge for holding sheet music.  It is wide enough to hold 3 sheets.

I hope to have the monitor mount / sheet music stand together by next weekend.

Re: Touchscreens

Looks very interesting. Keep us posted on the set-up and how PianoTeq works with touch screen. I think everyone will be interested. A video of working with Pianoteq using touchscreen???

Do you mind, when you have time, telling us a little about how you put together the monitor stand\music stand? I've thought along these lines, but never had a music stand and a monitor stand together in the same room, so I've always worried about how the clamps, screws, etc would come together. (Worried about the story "Man makes monitor stand, wakes up to find monitor on floor.")

Thanks. According to your picture, you have only half of a big, fat cat.

Re: Touchscreens

I finally got all of my parts together and got the touchscreen installed this weekend.

http://www.spacmann.net/images/IMG_2827.jpg

I designed the parts and had them fabbed up at work. It was a lot more expensive than I thought it was going to be, I would have probably have been better off to buy a existing monitor stand or use the existing stand and fabricate a shelf on my keyboard stand.

In my mind, the important part is the sheet music shelf that allows me to use the monitor as a regular music stand when I am using paper sheet music.  I put a tab towards the top of the shelf for me to stick the magnetic base for the Mighty Bright Duet2 LED sheet music light. The sheet music shelf could have been mounted in-between the existing stand and the monitor.  The shelf and monitor are wide enough to hold three 8-1/2" x 11" sheets.

All of the monitor cables (DVI, USB for touchscreen, and power) are hidden in the round support tube and I added a shoulder bolt for hanging my headphones when not in use.

FoxIt pdf reader works great for full screen display of two sheets of sheet music side by side.

I have blurry video that shows using the Pianoteq interface on the touchscreen that I am trying to upload to Youtube.  I will post the link if I can get it to work.

Like I said before, Pianoteq works fine just using my finger for most functions.  For setting the velocity curve and EQ it is better to use the stylus that came with the monitor.

Re: Touchscreens

Those are pretty skookum looking monitors - what are they?

An alternative program that is also free is PDF-XChange Viewer located at http://www.docu-track.com/.  I like this program because it allows you to annotate a pdf file and save the edits, but does not put in markings like FoxIt pdf reader does for the same capabilities.  It does do this for some other capabilities, but you can use PDFill PDF Tools (free) located at http://www.pdfill.com/ to overcome those limitations.  PDF-XChange Viewer seems to work fairly well with a touchscreen.

I don't have anything close to the nice setup being discussed in this topic, but I do have a laptop with a touchscreen (12 inch screen) that I have been using for a couple years with Pianoteq.  For my purposes, the laptop has worked reasonably well when playing Pianoteq and using PDF-XChange to display the music I am playing.

Looks like these ones :

Re: Touchscreens

Looks like a very sweet setup.

Hate to say the obvious, but there is probably a market for this kind of monitor\music stand. I don't think anyone has something quite like this out there. (?)

Good to the see that your cat has been restored to one piece.

Did you think to try the music reader software advertised on the Pianoteq user area Promotion section? I saw a CU professor use it in concert and he was quick as lightning using the pedal to turn pages. www.airturn.com

Here is the text on the Pianoteq web site (rebate for Pianoteq customers):

20%: AirTurn product bundle

Airturn is an innovative wireless device which lets you turn digital pages with a silent foot pedal so that you can keep your hands fully focused on your piano playing. Perfect for musicians who struggle with bulky gig books and messy sheet music binders, the AirTurn professional bundle includes the wireless AirTurn page turning transmitter, 2 silent foot pedals, and the MusicReader software which, besides working with the AirTurn, lets you scan and convert sheet music from paper scans or PDF files for use on your Mac or PC computer.

Re: Touchscreens

I have looked at the Airturn website & software hardware combination and it's pretty slick.  My wallet is a little empty at the moment though...

so....

Foxit reader can be configured when in full screen mode to use the left and right mouse buttons to scroll the pages.  I have an extra mouse, it would just be a matter of using the mouse circuit board with some larger foot switches...

All a moot point though, at this point on my piano journey, none of the beginner pieces I have learned are longer than two pages.
