Topic: Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-Sharp Minor, Op. 27 No. 2. "Moonlight" Mvt 1

Over the last couple of weeks I've been very much enjoying Pianoteq's U4 piano model these days, and a recent post by Stig (Pianoteqenthusiast) prompted me to post this rendition of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-Sharp Minor, Op. 27 No. 2. "Moonlight Sonata": I. Adagio sostenuto. It's a bit on the quick side compared to most performances—I guess I had just a little too much caffeine to play it slow!

Listen on Soundcloud:

Performed on Yamaha NU1X; rendered with Pianoteq 8.3.2 w/ U4 Tall Concert as the base preset in Logic Pro 11. I removed the reverb on the preset and replaced with Logic's ChromaVerb (Cathedral) preset. I'm also using an adjusted piano curve to better separate melody and accompaniment and highlight some of the unique textures in this preset between soft and loud velocities. This probably only works with my playing style on my Yamaha NU1X, but if you're interested, here's the velocity curve:

Global Velocity = [0, 18, 41, 57, 73, 88, 102, 127; 0, 8, 29, 51, 69, 86, 98, 121]

Other changes on the preset include setting Key Release to -3db and Pedal noise to -2db, and additional microphones (two in the back of the U4 on either side, angled to point towards the instrument, and one pointing down from above) and the wall is moved back a bit to make room for the new mics. Last but not least, I've disabled the built-in limiter on the preset.

Logic Mastering Chain: Compressor (Vintage VCA, -40db threshold, 1.3:1 ratio, 0db make up, 0.7 knee, 26ms attack, 48ms release, -12db auto gain) -> Tape Delay (22.3ms) ->  ChromaVerb (Cathedral, 0% Attack, 75% Size, 70% Density, 3.5s Decay, 85% Dry, 15% Wet) -> Linear EQ (50hz low cut)

Cheers,
~Kerri

At first I was thinking - what, a new piano, is this U4? Fantastic. You get soooo good sound here. Bravo!

I like your tempo, every single version is a bit different. Actually a magical performance, different, full of emotion. The differens with pp and f.

The first movement, which I like more than the rest, the broken minor chords played with the right hand countered with the octaves played with the left evoke sorrowful but at the same time, thanks to your playing, involving shades of other emotions like sadness, love , longing...It gives me a special mood that sweeps over me and then comes the melody seriously, makeme  wonder…..  it’s beautiful! Thanks Kerri

I love especially the section 2,11 - 2,20 -2,50  it grows! The slowly-building crescendo. And - the low tones at the end from about 4,17 to end. Sounds like a Grand piano! Beautifully played, beautiful sound. Congratulations Kerri. You did it - sublime!
Philippe should hear this, I really hope he do - the old U4 rules! Thanks to you Kerri.

And,  I am attaching an experiment that I will redo possibly with Ptq + Orgtq and extra sound. You inspired me now to play this piece again, which I tried to play in my youth....
I understand that you like my experiments so I attach one minute of Moonlight sonata in a different way...
This has nothing to do with Ptq but it connects my experiment with your playing  and I might now try the piece with Ptq Orgtq together

Imagine the following: you have a house on a beach and you open the door with a creak, you walk towards the beach and your footsteps are heard against the stone-paved yard. At the beach you hear the lapping of the waves and the sound of birds, it is night and the moon is shining, you sit down by your Grand piano which is currently out on the pier and begins to play the Moonlight sonata, with nature as an accompanying orchestra, night birds, waves, moonlight,….! And then came the choir also…..    a.s.o.
Just a short extract , a minute
