At the Temple Gates ( a very rare piece again)
Gatty Sellars (1887-1938) was described during his career as “the world’s greatest descriptive organist.” He played on radio and in films, and was filmed playing his "At the Temple Gates," at Central Hall, Westminster, which you can see on youtube, link later down the page.
I will try to play "At the Temple Gates,” the ending part of it (that he is playing in the video from about 1,30 - 3,00) . If you listen to my way of registration the piece, it is probably very different from the registration in the old video (in the video from about 1,30 to 3,00)
I believe that this is Sellars' most well-known work.
This scene must surely by of one standing at the gates of the Heavenly Temple. What else could it be?
We see and feel the solemn grandeur and ceremony, the devotion, the excitement of thousands upon thousands singing joyful praise, the hushed reverence as we behold the Almighty, in all of His terrible beauty, and then all creation joins in the final chorus.
The emotional ending is quite overwhelming, and you'll find tremendous "release" on the final chord.
Sellars calls for a "bell" at several points, so i add some at the end, Ptq Church Bells.
The score, published in 1930. My friend Dave got it again from Dr. John Henderson who also found Festal march that i played 5.8 2022, the exceptionally rare score that was marked lost….It is not in any UK libraries.
(description my friend Dave , Contrebombarde)
At the Temple Gates, Youtube, Sellars playing 1931, check from about 1,30 - 3,00 which I try to play too.
All the best, everyone
