Topic: Mission to remake this piano - help appreciated.

Hi,

I've been wanting to remake this piano for a long time but never got round to working out how. It's a bit of a wild one especially reverb wise but it's the resonance that really interests me. Not sure where to start, can anyone give me some advice?

I never tried to imitate a recorded piano, but I guess that with a lot of reverb, and perhaps giving a little extra impedance to the soundboard, plus extra resonance/ duplex scale, something similar could be obtained...

Skipping to this part at 2 minutes in, one can hear the piano without the vocals:

But there seems to be something else too, like a synth providing ambiance.

Not sure if that's coming across as "resonance" but if so then some layering with an electric piano might be needed to achieve a similar effect.

Re: Mission to remake this piano - help appreciated.

Maybe I will have a go later. I doubt my efforts will be fruitful or worth posting.

It's very very difficult to recreate a piano on a recording. To achieve something similar or equally pleasing perhaps try using the sostenuto pedal perhaps with a close microphone setting and oodles of 80s reverb and delay or possibly also a plate reverb.

A quick listen on smartphone speaker - a synth pad kicks in later in the track.

It's a classic album I haven't heard it in years.

Could be worth finding out which reverb and delays the engineer used. The album was something of a hi-fi showpiece so there is likely to be an article out there that explains what kit he used at the time.

Hi mwoodruff. We agreed with Modartt to do no advertisement for https://grand-artist.com in the forum as only in one treat. Anyhow it might be allowed as reply on your request; just 4 fun produced 3 presets on The Blue Nile for DG C. Bechstein. Slightly different presets a little harmonic distortion in the high frequency. Mostly the resonance future in the EQ and a lot of verb. Also the Morphing future is used. When u use the couponcode The Blue Nile its all for free on the Saxony Grand. Best regards Dick

Re: Mission to remake this piano - help appreciated.

This is really great, thanks so much for the heads up Dick. Ive downloaded and cant wait to try them. I must admit I'm slightly confused by the interface of it? I read the used guide and the quick start but couldn't really work out how it works? Do I need to have pianoteq open when I open the GA interface? How are they connecting to each other? Is there a way of recording with these presets in a DAW or is it best to use a loopback and record them in as audio? Sorry for all the questions - Im just trying to make sense of it. The examples on the website sound wonderful.

It was Calum Malcolm who produced pretty much all of their stuff, I think the gear he used was quite typical of the era, lots of lexicons and digital reverb as you would expect really. I guess being tracked on tape gives that extra character as well. Thanks for the suggestions, going to have a mess around later and see how I get on, great point on the pedal wasnt even on my radar to use that!

Absolutely - There is definitely a drone type synth going on.  I think maybe the word resonance is actually a bit misleading on my part, I think it's more like the piano has an unusual characteristic with something happening with the overtones which sounds quite strange to my ears, not sure I've heard much like it in that sense.

Hi, mwoodruff

Answer to your questions:

1. Do I need to have Pianoteq open when I open the GA interface? Not needed.

2. How are the devices connecting to each other? Pianoteq is hosted on GrandArtist.

2. The use of interface. Just open the GA interface and under preference first check the output you want to choose f.i. built in output or any other output device you prefer.

To use any preset: Click on the shown preset in the window and a popup menu appears there you select the preset you wanna use.

3. Recording is possible with a loopback f.i via Audio Hijack 4, choose system audio for recording. Now you create an audiofile for processing if you like in your preferred DAW.

Hope this helped.

Best regards,
Dick
