Topic: Yamaha smooth release conversion to classical note-off velocity

Hi,

Pianoteq 8, still doesn't play smooth release from Yamaha N1X, N3X,  P515,  new Clavinova "smooth release"

Yamaha use Poly Aftertouch release between 20 to 31 values. (but read invert 31 to 20)

I can't convert in Pianoteq 8 un midi options polyphonic aftertouch to note off velocity..... even if i use Disklavier midi  dialect.....

So the soluce is to convert in a DAW, example :

Works like a charm, after settings basic linear note off velocity in Pianoteq with this Logic 10 script.

But why not to this directly in Pinaoteq 8 future update for all Yamaha new pianos that use this Smooth release (with midi poly aftertouch)?

Regards,

Olivier F.

Hi Olivier,

Are you sure the P515 has smooth release?

Warmest regards,

Chris

I have the clp 745 but i dont see smooth release being transmitted to pianoteq at all. Aftertouch values appear to be constant for all keys at all velocities. Is this something that has to be switched on in the piano first? Would be good to have a way in pianoteq to interpret this directly the way you're doing via logic pro.

Your Clavinova doesn't use poly aftertouch, but classical note off velocity instead (like the P515 - error up in my first post)

So you don't need my script tp convert, you have just to calibrate Pianoteq Note off velocity curve to have smooth release.

more easy for you Clavinova

I guess because this would be out of MIDI standards and currently PianoTeq only uses note-off value (which is inaccurate by the way regarding how an acoustic piano works).

In PianoTeq, once the note-off event is passed, there no possibility to have the string ringing again without a new note-on event. In a real piano, you can "smooth release" (so slightly pressing the damper against the string) then depress again the key and have the string keep on vibrating.

The proper way to do this is to take into account the poly aftertouch events occuring after the note-on and use them instead of simple note-off (for keyboards equiped with poly-aftertouch of course).

To conclude, I guess Modartt will implement some day a proper release based on standard poly aftertouch (complementary to the note-off method) for those with compatible keyboards, instead of implementing now something aiming to interpret the Yamaha proprietary protocole. That's just my guess...

Interesting discussion.
