Listening to Modartt example, I tested sound from many Pianoteq models. Decided to use Steingraeber, not Bluethner. Although I have only Standard and not Pro and Ptq v.4. I worked many hours.McCartney used a Bluthner for Let it be, the 1907 Bluthner grand on which he supposedly wrote the Beatles' most-covered ballad Yesterday and messed around with while filming ‘Help’ in 1965.
It didn't turn out like Paul's Bluethner and Modartt's example, but maybe Pro would have helped me a little more.
Here is Modartt's example and my result. I hardly need to be ashamed of the result because Modartt says:

Very strange. When importing midi in Garageband, Mac mini, I just got the midi file and then used many other parameter changes in Pianoteq. No
use of 3rd-party plugins. Pure Ptq production.
Yeah, the file anomalies don't really affect playback except for the half-beat of dead air at the beginning. It just offends my sense of order. ;^)
Constructive crit.. it is a bit soft version (like my first v.) and the second chord is missing that ”crisp strong treble” sound as in the target recording (I had same problem). And in my opinion a bit big room or a bit too much reverb compared with target recording.
The overall loudness is comparable but I may have turned down PTQ's dynamic range too much for it to render that second hit properly. I found it challenging to get the overall 'muffled' tone but still preserve those ringing harmonics and I may not have re-leveled after the final EQ adjustments. I noticed that second chord continuied to be 'weak' but thought anything more sounded a little too strident anyway so I left it. I was really chasing the overall tone and voicing of chords and the high velocity on the high note in the MIDI just didn't sound right. As for Reverb, I chose the Dry Room but got distracted adjusting the soundboard impedance and forgot to pull the Mix level down as I had intended.

A definite improvement. I found the "workshop" post you were referencing and downloaded the MIDI file. What a mess! There are three empty tracks before the 4th track that contains the MIDI. The performance tempo is 72bpm, but the file is 120bpm. The first note starts at 1:01:658 (960 PPQ). And it has hundreds of superfluous sustain controllers repeating the same 0 and 127 values every 10-12 ticks - sometimes two on the same tick. I brought it into Cakewalk and worked with it there so I could easily A/B against the original recording and use 3rd-party plugins.
So this is not a pure Pianoteq production, but here's what I came up with:

it's actually a nice Hi Fi version of the old piano from the record on first listen, might be a lovely and usable sound for lots of modern music. Tasteful and again, proud of you.
A lot of old pianos on well loved music from the past (old LPs etc.) may indeed be in mono (source) piano, which can still be panned in different ways.. which is worth doing with Pianoteq - I am sure a lot of users will not think "mono can be excellent for piano mixing".
A lot of those lovely old pianos, IF isolated out of the music, can sound extremely thin, or saturated, highly compressed or excited etc. Often it's the 'dream' of capturing the sound of a greatly loved old piece of music.. and missing the production elements along the way which makes a difference in enjoying the result or not.. and what you did I think is like getting a pretty cool variant of it, but also making it usable in a lot of contemporary music.

I suppose I could come much closer using Ptq D4 Classical AB preset and Pro. Anyway, it was nice to give it a try. Notice that the original recording is almost mono. I had it in mind when working.

]]>I gather you used a 3rd-party MIDI file as opposed to recording it yourself...? The amplitude response to velocity seems reasonable, but the timbral variation is a little extreme - almost like what you get with a sampled piano that doesn't have enough velocity layers. I would suggest compressing the MIDI velocity range - either by editing in a DAW or by adjusting Pianoteq's velocity curve.
