Royer was one of those composers who were familiar to me in name only. Wow, what have I been missing? I can't help wondering if Rick Wakeman got some of his inspiration from Royer!

Ah yes, I love that as well, it's pretty jazzy - but I was thinking of Variation 16 in the Diabelli Variations.

Love it! Will have to check out the Bach gigue from the E minor partita, too. One of my favourite 'surprisingly modern' moments is the 'boogie woogie' variation in Beethoven's Diabelli Variations (can't remember which variation it is, don't have a score to hand).

Cool discovery! Yeah, very entrancing doppel-rhythm. FWIW, I alway found the gigue from Bach's e-minor partita pretty modern sounding, too.

I agree, that whether because of its chord sequence, bass accompaniment, or rhythm structure, it does sound very 20th century rock-like.
