As you may have noticed from other comments they wish me post more works by Melartin. So I’m working now on a version of Sleeping beauty, Melartin, E. - Butterfly Waltz, Op. 22 No. 17. This piece is originally from a series of incidental music for a stage play of Sleeping Beauty by Zacharias Topelius, 1818 - 1898, swedish talking finnish writer, author, historian, journalist and poet.
The earliest “Sleeping Beauty” fairytale appears in oral tradition around the 1300s, different versions.

Loving how the spider bites happen at the end (some severe chords) but finished on a grand happy major - pretty amusing and I imagine in music classes in schools, children would probably have lots of fun dancing to this.

Yes, music classes in school 9 - 12 years old, didn’t use this Tarantella dance but I used Aram Khachaturian’s Sabre Dance from his second ballet, Gayane (wonderful music) and Gtieg’s In the Hall of the Mountain King among others.

]]>beautiful performance of this very interesting piece. indeed i had never hear of this composer and i'm glad to learn of him. besides Sibelius, the only other Finnish composer i've spent time with is Einojuhani Rautavaara.
Thank you budo for liking the Tarantella, a different piece of music. Prokofjev has composed one almost the same sounding Tarantella. Will upload it also. Nice that you had to do with Rautavaara. Many find his choir music very difficult to sing, complicated.
We have an incredible number of composers in our little Finland and many young people do rap and light music. Here are examples of some major composers from the past, several has been studying in France, Germany and study arabian music and so on….

]]>Because I think you have not heard of this composer, I have this info from Wikipedia:
Erik ”Erkki” Melartin (7.2 1875 - 14.2 1937) Finnish composer
Melartin studied theory and composition at the Helsinki Institute of Music in 1892-99 and was later a student of Robert Fuchs in Vienna. Returning to his homeland, Melartin worked as a teacher at the music institute and conductor at the orchestra in Viborg. From 1911 he was director of the Helsinki Music Institute. Melartin was a very productive composer. He has written songs and piano pieces as well as several symphonic poems and major orchestral works. He was primarily a poet. He started in particular on the Finnish folk song, which he sometimes introduced in his original form in his orchestral works. Melartin has gained popularity both at home and abroad, especially through his traditional, weighty songs and piano pieces.
This piano piece Tarantella is from op 23 ”Small miniatures for piano”
The dance got its name from the fact that it resembles the convulsions after tarantula bites.
I suppose that the ending chord in the music describes how the dancers fall to the ground from cramp, a painful contraction of a muscle which cannot be controlled. But they probably do not die from the bite.
