Elgar was largely self-taught as a composer. Here's a little anecdote which always makes me smile: he once read in a textbook that a tritone key relationship was 'not to be tolerated' - so he was determined to use it! The result can be heard in the 1st movement of the 1st symphony, in the transition from Andante (Ab major) to Allegro (D minor).
