Hi Alex,
I do experiment with them basically to get PTQ sounding good through my internal speakers (Kawai CA97).
As I have got the layout of the physical source of sound (my speakers), I just adjust the mics in PTQ the same way, as if they were capturing the same sound that should be coming out of my speakers, that makes a big difference when hearing it through them, while it does sound awkward through headphones.
Also some EQ needed cause the internal speakers are somewhat colored I'd say, and of course trying the different angles and distances (usually quite close to the sound board).
It's not a scientific method nor I can talk about much details but it works for my purpose.

I also believe that placing microphones in accordance with the actual sound output (speakers) is the best way to obtain a sound more consistent with the reality of the instrument.

Yes, guilty as charged, I enjoy experimenting with mic positions! It's fascinating but very complicated - you will soon notice that just small movements can make significant differences. The best 'way in' is to study the mic placements in the many uploads to fxp corner. And you can 'import' (copy & paste) mic placements from other presets: for instance, try mixing one of the close mic or 'player' presets (mics 1 & 2) with a distant setting such as mics 3 & 4 from Pleyel 1926 Recording. Adjust levels to taste!
