Long time Pianoteq user, I find their activation system totally fine. You have 3 slots (PCs) for activation, there is no way of "accidently" deactivating it on your PC. You have to do it from the Pianoteq website from the user area. My guess is that it is done due to software piracy reasons. There is nothing to worry about for a casual user. I strongly believe that in some very rare cases when someone somehow happen to screw things up, it will be possible for the support team to make an exception for a certain case and re-activate the PC in question, although I can't be speaking for them and be 100% sure. I think there is nothing to worry about. Uninstall or reformatting a HD/SSD does not make it deactivated.

I'm interested in purchasing Pianoteq 7, but I am also nervous about this weird floating license restriction.

I find it odd that once the license is deactivated from a computer, it can never be re-activated on that computer. How easy is it to accidentally deactivate a computer from either the web interface or from the software? I would hate to accidentally deactivate it and then be forced to buy a new PC to use Pianoteq. (or is it a simple matter of changing the machine/host name on the PC?)

If the license can be deactivated from the SW, will there be a prompt to enter my Modartt acount password to confirm? If not then that may mean I should not allow my kids to play with this system for fear of deactivation.

I'm nervous because my Pianoteq 7 upgrade won't activate and it says my computer may be deactivated, which I definitely didn't do. Pianoteq 6 still works. So if the activation screwed up could it basically brick my computer for Pianoteq 7? Or can they reactivate a computer in special circumstances? All I know is that I bought 7 and I can't use it and I haven't heard anything from tech support after a couple of days.
