The task is not as daunting as it may seem: open both the mics window and the presets manager and drag one of them to the side. Then, as you click through the presets, you will see all the mic positions changing instantly. It's very instructive. You will notice that some of the player position settings have the mics very close to the piano, others are further back.

and you can use the freeze parameters feature to move a mic config from one piano to another.  this is a lot of fun to play with.

oshogg, I suggest you download a standard demo and visually inspect the presets, to find ones which can meet your criteria.

oshogg, I also have the Stage version and am not as expert on the fine points of microphone placement, etc., as many others are here. However, I can point you to a few player-perspective presets for the Steinway D: "Steinway D Player Clean," "Steinway D Player Wide," and any preset that has "BA" in the name. The "BA" nomenclature indicates player perspective, whereas "AB" is recording (audience) perspective. Also, the "Steinway D Home" preset (my favorite for general day-to-day use) might also be player perspective, but I'm not sure. That preset used to be called "D4 Daily Practice" in older versions, and it has always been intended for daily live piano practice (as opposed to recording). I would guess that such a preset would also have a player perspective. If I'm wrong about that, perhaps someone else can correct me.
