the problem is that on macs, the mouse scrollwheel is continuous (or has a much smaller step). And also, depending on the parameter, the notion of step size as "+-0.01" or "+- 0.001" is not always pertinent, as they vary do not vary linearly with respect to the slider position (see for example unison width)

and perhaps there is no one single setup that will satisfy everyone. Maybe a customizable "mouse-wheel-sensitivity" parameter will do the job... but this perhaps a bit larger a request...

E.g. in the spectrum profile i'd like to put +.02 db for the base frequency (1st harmonic) and -0.2db for the second. So: two wheel turn clicks up over the 1st, and two wheel turn clicks down over the second.
Just to make myself clear (though I think I was understood) - by "click" I mean that the mouse wheel naturally "clicks" when it turns, I don't mean pressing it like a middle button.

What I don't like about the sideways movement is that this editing style drives the mouse away from the area your editing.

Single step. Pardon for my lack of explanation.

Say, we have a parameter that goes from -1 to 1, in 0.01 increments. One scroll of mousewheel would go one increment up/down.

This is valid for all other parameters. So, depending on the stepsize (parameter increment), the scrollwheel uses that to change the value of the slider.

For example, main output volume is adjusted in 0.1 steps, so one scroll would do just that. Etc.

I do feel that *single*-stepping as the default - without other combinations (e.g. shift)  would be very useful.
I'm thinking of the following use-case: I want to fine tune a setting,
so in my right hand I single-step with the mouse-wheel, and my left hand I play the keys and listen to the effect. Seems to me the most precise and fastest way to dail-in the finest details.

Perhaps its a matter of taste, and should be configurable...

We did update the mouse wheel handling after your original post, do you still think the steps are too big ? The shift+wheel combination is also available for finer control.

This is actually a small feature (or adjustment) request.
Currently the middle mouse wheel changes parameter values by large jumps (> 1).
I personally don't find this setting very useful. I think it would be much better to have it change value on a +1 -1 basis. Just like in Cubase.
Pianoteq is very sensitive to small changes in values - and the wheel could be used to fine tune these settings, to get as close as you can to the sound you want ... The only option today typing it, which slows down the process significantly.

Modartt, does this sound reasonable?
